I've had a few... unorthadox decks reach the 'Top Decks' list, my favourite being my deck 'Storng hold on Discipline' :D

3 colours isn't so bad, there's a lot of lands that can help with the mana fixing, I was just trying to keep this deck free of those expensive ($) lands. Maybe I should add a set of Evolving Wilds?
An alternate win con would be a good idea, only problem I see with Arcbound Crusher is he only has madular 1, ie Heartless will kill him before he can have more +1/+1's put on him :/
Those 3 where the first that came to mind, there are other hybrid cards that could work. Cackler is crazy good in an aggressive deck, it's a 1st turn 2/2, there's verey few 1 drop 2/2's with an acceptable drawback. Slitherhead is a zombie, so it can help with the Gravecrawlers return affect. Deathrite is a good card, but I feel it doesn't quite fit an aggressive strategy.
Looks like a good start, now just for playtesting. Don't forget, although you're going for "mono" black, you have access to black hybrid cards (Deathrite Shaman, Rakdos Cackler, Slitherhead, etc.)
Trying to keep this Modern legal and Rite of Flame is on the banned list :(
Here's how I'd run a Empty the Warrens deck: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=413167&DeckCommentID=309696
Thanks for spotting that, it's fixed now
Replacing Propaganda with Ghostly Prison (effectivly the same card, just not a blue permanent) and Counterspell with Mana Leak, and this deck will be Modern legal. Followed Footsteps on Mirror-Sigil Sergeant is quite a fun combo.
I think you mean Populate. I'm trying to stay away from token based, but mostly because that's what the guild does (I like being different). I'm actually waiting to afford Loxodon Smiters and Dryad Militant, but I currently lack the cash flow to get any more cards at the moment :(
I suggest trying to work at least one of you spells into the main deck. I'd say either the Abrupt Decay or Maelstrom Pulse, preferably both.
I kinda like Grave Titan myself, while not a zombie himself, he does create a small zombie army of his own :p
I do use Gatherer, but mostly to double check on rulings for cards while I'm designing decks and to see if there are similar cards that I may have missed. I have read comments on certain cards and drawn insperation from them for decks, but mostly my ideas come from the Vault and idle conversation with friends.
Legacy is the 2nd most nasty format for a casual player to jump into (worst being Vintage). I suggesst starting on Standard, then branching into Extended and Modern. What makes Legacy nasty is the "top decks" in the format have been honed and fine tuned to such a point that it can be daunting for a "newbie" to to play against. I'll be first to admit that the only reason I did well was a combination of who I played against, good draws (and some bad for my opponent), and silly mistakes by the opponent. That being said, this deck is technically Legacy legal, but that's largly because of the use of some cards (Priest of Titania, Regrowth and Green Sun's Zenith). I'm not sure what changes I'd make to make this a competative Legacy deck as I've not played the format for a while now. So I'm not sure what affects Return to Ravnica mite have had on the format...
No worry. My "guidelines" are just a result of trial and error. That and having to dig for cheap and / or easier to get replacements for cards :p As I prefer Modern, cards like Wellwisher aren't legal in the format, so I look for similar cards. Sometimes I stumble across cards that may work better in the correct deck :p
Sadly, it is and it's not Modern legal (I plan to keep this Modern legal). I've tried adding a third colour on many occasions, but I've found that it either slows the deck down (it's already a slow deck) or prevents it from working...
I'm not sure about 3 colours. I find that unless you sun a lot of multi colour lands, 3+ colour decks suffer to mana problems. I'm not saying you can't try, just pointing out what personal experience has taught me. Unfortunately, pure soulbond decks won't work, you need some interaction with non soulbond creatures to get maximum use out of the bond effects. That being said, bonding Wolfir Silverheart to a Silverblade Paladin is awesome :D
Glad to see I inspired someone :p A note on Essence Warden, I'm sure you know by now it's a lightning rod for kill. I find that I often play it as one so the kill gets wasted on it and not my next creature that I want to live >:)
I'd like to argue against that "not good for Legacy" statement. I've used my Modern legal elf deck in Legacy and on 2 occasions, I came in the top 3. Now I agree that it's not ideal for Legacy, it's still a good deck type.
i know that in my build I use Warden over Wisher because Wisher needs to wait a turn to activate and the life gain is often killed by my next turn
