Oh, and as for the sideboard, I'd add some sort of graveyard removal in the random case you go up against a mythic eldrazi. You almost cannot beat them otherwise...

I saw a really neat deck like this that also used time warp and silence to really take advantage of your howling mines and make sure they get less use of it. Font of mythos works wonders, too! One other suggestions... I know you don't run any creatures but i think just simply added a wall of omens could really help. They are great early game blockers and draw you a card which still helps you use your erasures!
Splashing for the rite is also really easy. Besides having 8 spells and 7 lands that can fetch an island, I also have 8 creatures that can be used to produce blue mana, 4 that can cascade into a spell that gets them, and 4 creatures that can strait up find both at once just by coming into play. I really don't feel like it's a big problem, especially not when the goal is to play the blue spell at 9 mana...
Scorpio is correct. Valukut is the main point of the deck. There are still 7 lands that allow forthe ultimate hand with the birds. Not having it isnt entirely critical. It should function well without that but if you get it, it's just an added bonus.
Another option instead of spellbook is Reliquary tower. Does the same thing but also counts as a land! Also, Curiosity combos really well with Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind. Essentially, if you can enchant the Firemind with it, you win the game as long as your library has more cards than their life total. I'd maybe swap it for the horned helm, simply because i personally don't like that as much. Just an idea. Comment on my decks? http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=86413
Is the chalice really that good? I dont have too many planeswalker that it really makes a huge difference i think. I dont see many times when i need it. I've tried it & there's almost always better options for turn 2...
Spreading seas does the same thing, plus draws a card. Many people in top 8's are still maindecking 4 for these reasons. I dont mean to argue but i still think it's one of the best options for UW decks against many decks. I do like the other ideas though.
I know... I dont like it much either but have a suggestion? Even pros occasionally pull out the 61 card decks though.
Ok, great suggestions! Thank you. I do really want to stick with the spreading seas, however, because they are a basic out to many decks (especially jund!). They are good enough in those matchups to buy me at least an extra couple turns which can be incredibly helpful. Thanks again though.
Seems like burst lightning is pretty strictly superior to shock. Searing Blaze seems pretty awesome, too. Just some ideas.
Pretty good deck, especially on a budget! That's awesome. Only problem is Lightning Helix and Kird Ape are no longer part of the extended format. I'm sure you can replace those easy enough though. Cool deck.
How should I change the land base though? Suggestions?
Well, I gave it a quick try. I'm sure there are many things I may have missed. I'd appreciate any feedback. The land base was just quickly thrown together. I'm sure it could be done without nearly as many rare lands. http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=79784
The extra card is amazing as it basically replaces itself and the fact that it comes down a turn earlier can make a world of difference when staring down a RDW deck, filled with haste and burn! Adding a couple Wall of Denial isn't too bad of an idea but usually it seems best to keep the Wall of Omens.
Oh, and Idyllic Tutor could be used to replace Steelshapers gift. This still slows the deck down a fair amount I suppose, but it just seems so cool.
Well, I was quite inspired by this deck and had to see if it could be done in the current extended format. The only card that doesn't fit the bill is the Paradise Mantle (quite necessary I realize) and the Steelshaper's Gift which is used only for the Paradise Mantle. While I did not find another equipment to work so well, I was able to find Utopia Vow which would essentially provide the same function. Only problems are it's green and can only be used on one target... Still could have quite a bit of potential I think. Mind if I try and create a similar deck using this concept? I'd like to see your take on it as well.
That is an awesome deck! Great idea & pretty budget worthy, too! Only suggestion would be to maybe bring the number of puresight merrow to 4 to enable you to more quickly & easily find your win condition of choice. Awesome idea!
I understand the temptation behind the Ascension... But is it truly worth running in a deck like this? If the point is to mill your opponent, then how often will you really even get the Ascension "leveled" all the way? Just doesn't seem worth it to me. Past that, it looks pretty solid but slightly conflicted still between a quick beatdown and a true mill deck. No tome scours or Jace's erasures?!
I don't think the Jace's Erasures seem to be needed much. You already have better win conditions for this deck and so they appear to just be taking up space. The dispels seem slightly subpar as well. I'd probably think about adding in some day of judgements and/or Oblivion Rings as well. They are awesome for taking out just about anything, even opposing planeswalkers! Great first deck though. Check out my UW control. Just made it recently but it hasn't got quite as much for expensive cards (besides a couple lucky planeswalkers I recieved). http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=79162
Instead of Rampant Growth, why not play Sakura Tribe Elder?
