It will be once M15 comes out.
Pretty fun challenge. I threw together a Defender deck that plays differently than Krazzong's. Still ramps into the winners, but it wins in a totally different way(s). http://www.mtgvault.com/zanmor/decks/wall-be-damned/
One weird thing I can see allowing a free search for a basic land might do is allow you to warp your mana base a lot: if I know I'll be able to search for a basic land then I might only need two or three of one type in my deck and I could load up on the other.
Yeah, it's all about getting Marit out asap, so the ramp helps with Hex but it also allows Thespian's Stage to get activated sooner in some cases, or a turn 1 search with Expedition Map to get the lands you need sooner.
I'd propose that if you actually wanted to play these decks against each other that you start the game by searching your deck for one basic land and putting it into play, then drawing your starting hand. This means you could start playing cards turn 1.
Cut out the blue and white since they didn't really bring much. Upped the utility from green. I've been testing this against some of the other one drop decks and it really seems OP.
Hexmage and Lightning Greaves are great here, but both fall outside the 1 CMC criteria. Thanks!
http://www.mtgvault.com/zanmor/decks/marit-lage-and-one-drops/ A Marit Lage deck for the list.
A Shadowborn Apostle themed deck: http://www.mtgvault.com/zanmor/decks/mothdust-demon/I may try a Dark Depths deck next. Thespian's Stage seems like the best bet, it's just a matter of what to support it with.
Here is a ruling via http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/ : "Casting a spell using flashback doesn't change the mana cost (or converted mana cost) of the spell. You just pay the flashback cost instead" and "Buyback costs don't count toward a spell's mana cost or converted mana cost, whether they're paid or not." So it definitely doesn't effect the CMC of the spell in these two cases, though it still feels somewhat out of the scope of these decks to me.
Thoughts on extra costs like Buyback or Flashback or things of that nature? Activated abilities that cost more than one mana? I've been avoiding them so far but they are technically outside the 1 CMC rule.
Just wanted to make people aware of Surge Node. It's an artifact that can give other artifacts charge counters and may make it feasible to play artifacts that would normally require you to pay X for them to come in with charge counters. It's probably not worthwhile, but it's there if you really want to try it.
The only reason Rancor isn't in is because I've already seen it show up in 2 or 3 other 1 drop decks so far. There are very few decks with green that Rancor shouldn't go in. It's would also be the most expensive card in the deck, I believe, though that's not really saying anything.
This is actually a lot of fun. Here's a rainbow deck: http://www.mtgvault.com/zanmor/decks/golden-grab-bag/
I put together a Simic deck: http://www.mtgvault.com/zanmor/decks/simic-one-drops/
Got those cards in. Have't actually trimmed out the others since I'm still under 100 cards in deck. Signets are also going in as mana sources for my other EDH decks since they are indeed better than Prismatic Lens.
Aweesome, thanks for the help!
You could run some artifact search (Tinker, Fabricate, etc.), 3 more Academies to increase the odds of drawing one, and a lot of cheaper artifacts to make the Academy more worthwhile. These should all allow you to get Planar Portal in place and use it faster, then everything else is butter. You could also throw in Voltaic Key so you could potentially use the Portal twice in a single turn, allowing you to draw your kill cards. Finally, you need some counters just for artifact killers.
Now that I look at it, it seems going black could be a decent idea for Diabolic Tutor, allowing me to search for the winning enchant. I'd probably have to consider dropping blue in that case.
