I'd def run 4x Brave the Elements over the Journeys. It has saved me more times than I can recall in my knight deck.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
Also, no Inkmoth Nexus? Does it slow this deck down too much? Also, what do you do against another aggro deck? Say they do the smart thing once you drop your whole hand and wait a turn and then pyroclasm and begin playing their hand? You're pretty much screwed. I think you should include maybe 3 Ratchet Bombs just in case.
I'd love to see either 4x Inquisition of Kozilek in the main deck. Gets rid of those pesky counters so your cards actually hit the field and with this deck including Mox Opals, you'll have enough to cast your signal pest and an Inquisition on the first turn sometimes. Pretty sweet if you ask me.
Maybe elven piper too?
For a sideboard, you could probably add in some more counters, I wouldn't do any more than 1 stoic rebuttal because you'll be sacrificing a lot of artifacts with the Forgemasters, so probably a few Mana Leaks and a Deprive. Memoricide would be great here against a great many matchups. Have you thought of the possibilities of Thopter Assembly + Gravitational Shift in aggro matchups? For sideboard tech? It truly is awesome. I'm very surprised to see that you're not running one Myr Battlesphere to combo on your Forgemasters because of the extra tokens it produces. Basically a free sac next turn or even that turn if you play it from hand and have a forgemaster in play. I think Black Sun's Zenith, maybe even just 1-2 main deck or sideboard would be awesome here. You can't always rely on ratchet bomb to get rid of absolutely everything and the more board sweepers you have, the better.
I've also been seriously contemplating mainboarding Duress. It's just too great in those situations where you can't afford your play to be countered. I may have to try a U/B version and see if I like it as much as I like this one. Esper with Gideon, Venser and Tempered steel sounds tempting too, but idunno.
Oh! Also, what about Duress or Inquisition of Kozilek? They really give you that edge you need and you know their hand, which is amazing. I've been thinking about main boarding the Duress in the deck I linked above.
Thanks for the comment! I do love me some ratchet bomb action. I use 3 in my U/W Control deck and they're great! I may have to try them out with a mix of Pyroclasm and Slagstorm. Maybe I can remove the Black sun's zenith for it? hmmm..
Why is it that in my last 4 posts, 3 of them I've suggested Gideon Jura?! ANYWAY, he would just be a rockstar in this deck. Turn 5, Gideon. Turn 6, Sunblast Angel Sounds pretty sick.
Looks good man! I played around and decided to do almost the same thing with Grixis colors. Check it out =D http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=150062
So far in testing, these are my results out of a best of 3 match. Caw-Blade: 2-1 Valakut: 2-0 Boros: 2-1 Kuldotha Red: 2-0 B/U Control: 1-2 Vampires: 2-1 Elf Vine: 2-0 Quest ww: 2-1 Not a bad record so far. I'm still unsure if I need to have 3 Forgemasters or if 2 is what the deck really wants. I like this version better because it has a little more survivability and options than Chapin's version. You don't even NEED to spring the forgemasters for it to be good. They're just in case you need an "over the top" strategy to pull you through a game.
3x Green Sun's Zenith. Ramp up and cast what you want, when you want. Most of your dragons have green in their casting cost, so this works nicely.
Also, I think your Big Jace should be main board if you're planning on using him at all. Gideon would rock here too! For this deck, I'd have to say Gideon > Venser.
Is the deck name a reference to Silverchair's oldschool song "Pure Massacre"? If so, you're awesome lol If not, either way, I like the deck. It looks pretty fast and fuels the masticore well. The only suggestion I can even give is that it needs some kind of card draw engine.. maybe even mini Jace? Once you're out of cards, you're stuck. If they board sweep, or YOU do with your DoJ, it will be hard for you to recoup. You should be able to protect him well enough anyway with all your aggro creatures.
I'm sure this deck can win quickly if it's unhindered in the first 3 turns, but 1 pyroclasm = you lose. Counterspells or pretty much any kind of early removal in general will stop you dead since this deck pretty much needs every card you play to stay in play to win. Why? Once you've played all the cards in your hand, and they wipe out all the threats you just played, they win. You don't have enough card draw to compensate for them doing this and your small creatures won't be enough late game when they're dropping fatties. I'd suggest Sign in Blood, it gives you some MUCH needed card draw in this deck.
Joraga Treespeaker for mana fixing? Has the chance to buff other elves with mana gain? Or Elvish Archdruid even?
Actually sleeving it up now to playtest it. I'll let you guys know how it goes!
I agree with you, my version I'm running: 3 Jace 2 Gideon 1 Venser
