I do like D-Demon in modern also, hit hits the sweet spot for creatures.
He's black(dodges doomblade and other non-black effects)
6 toughness(most burn spells)
has evasion
control elements
CMC is 4 so dodges decay.

I play a mono black 8-rack deck that plays 4 pack rat/4 muta's so i understand completely:p

Don't get me wrong its fine in like some dredgevine lists, just 4 mana is a lot for a creature that could be a 1/1 or 2/2 a lot of the time:P i mean the obvious inclusion would be gofy, but we all know you have to sell the rights to your unborn children to get a playset of goyf.

scavenging ooze could work, but I truly love pack rat in modern:)

nighthowler ins't good in this deck as you don't run many creatures, and i know you're going to say " but its all graveyards"
And that's where i point out that not all modern decks run many creatures. infact most run under 20(besides a few exceptions)

Don't get me wrong I play combo also, I just don't feel like straight crushing players who can't afford good decks with combo game after game.
I mean I can go:
Dream halls into
omniscience
enter the infinite /win no problem in my neka.dec
or temble bell/mind over matter
or neka/helm of the ghastlord

just it isn't fun ruining your friends time when they're jsut getting into magic. once they havea real deck sure.

also glipmse of nature will help you play your whole deck if need be when you have an infinite mana combo out.

why no splinter twin/presence of gond/midnight guard? I mean you have the Kiki resto/bellringer combo in there, why not add the rest of the pieces to make it more common to pull off?
Besides that I feel yours is more combo oriented rather then just the striaght beatdown path.
Some groups of friends/play groups try to stray away from combo decks, so that may also explain why his deck is how it is.

I would work on lowering the number of tapped lands the 3 scry temples and more basics to make the deck a bit more smooth, add 3 cycle lands.
I won't say fetches as they are expensive but if you have the money 9 fetches help thin the deck.

There are different kind of decks... he has protection, removal, card advantage and beaters.
I really don't see why you're hating on this perfectly fine deck.
