Gray Merchant or Fanatic would be fun, do some burn damage, and use whip to bring it back and burn again! I love any discard, so I love this deck!If you have some spare time, check out my new modern mono-black deck (with discard!) http://www.mtgvault.com/planbfan/decks/deny-deny-deny/

Deck has been updated to add a little more speed and some utility dealing with creatures/enchantments.
I made a few changes, Eidolon of Countless Battles will be nasty in this deck methinks. I think I might even sideboard the Mistcutter's for Ethereal Armor or Renounce the Guilds just to piss them off even more.
Titan's Strength, maybe even some Aqueous Form. Like everyone else said, some more creatures. Lots of card draw for such a low curve deck helps a lot, good thing you have it!
Interesting change-up. I thought of this deck more of as an aggro deck... try to make the creatures quick, big, and buff them with lifelink/trample/vigilance. Most times when I play this deck I don't even get to the Hydras, I usually do hella-damage with a Fleecemane + Courage or Voice/Gift combo tokens. Experiment One with Voice tokens coming in every turn gets real big real quick. Thanks for the input!
Oh I meant using it's activated ability with Fanatic and Merchant! However I can see the benefit from the Hammer and haste for the fast-play. I'll check out that deck for ya.
This looks really fun to play. I was surprised when you mentioned a T4 devotion, great move. I would like to see another Whip in exchange for the Hammer, great synergy with the Gray Merchant/Fanatic. Speaking of which... have you had a chance to play test with with that many Merchants? Sideboard a few Duress or Thoughtseize could be good for those pesky blue decks or board wipes. Love the deck. If you have a chance, could you take a look at one of my decks and provide some feedback? I would appreciate it.
Feedback would be most appreciated, if you have any suggestions. Or maybe it's that awesome already???
Bred for the Hunt + multiple ways to make creatures unblockable = card draw for one less mana. Fathom mage is a solid choice, though.
A 4-drop for mana ramp is a little iffy for me. However with evolve and bio shift it's quite easy to ramp Sage, a lot of flexibility. It's definitely something to consider. I should probably build this deck. If I draw a Kiora this weekend I probably will, however I finally finished my EDH deck and just built 2 new decks, so justifying the price for 2 Kiora's isn't really there.
I should have also added "mashed potatoes"
Thanks for the like! Gyre Sage is an interesting one. I really like Caryatid for the flexibility in which color mana I get, on the other hand, I really like Mystic's 1-drop cost. Then again, Sage offers some flexibility with +1/+1 counters. I haven't actually built this deck to play-test it... however I imagine Sage would be a great replacement for Mystic's in this deck. Thanks for the input!
Any feedback would be most appreciated.
She was in my older version of this deck. I'm thinking about taking out 2 of the Smiter's and putting in 2x Scavenging Oozes. It's just a hard decision b/c a Smiter with Courage is a 6/6 Trample-Lifelink I can get going on turn 4. The Lions are a new addition. I'm thinking about taking Smiters down a little and using the Lions in the same way on turn 3.
Trample negates the need for that kind of removal, however Nylea's bow wouldn't be a bad choice. I had both in my previous version of this deck.
Mistcutter is there for those pesky blue decks, which is more often than not. I had primordial in my deck before I made it standard... Found myself not using it for big drops. I often do the most damage with unflinching courage on Smiters or voice tokens. The ramp from kalonian makes him a big target right away, leaving open everything else to swing.
I thought about Thune for a hot minute. She's definitely great for life gain. I really like Kalonian b/c it can get huge in just a few turns and already has trample, really puts pressure on the opponent with the amount of +1/+1 counters it can add to my creatures.. It's also half the price of Thune. I guess it would come down to personal preference. If I continue play-testing and decide I need more white devotion, she may go in. Thanks for the input!
Definitely go with what works best for you, just wanted to mention it since it would work well with adding counters and is only a 5 drop for such a beast of a creature.
Kalonian Hydra works well with this deck. Would also keep you standard.
Hrmmm interesting. I think it's at least worth a sideboard. Thanks for the input.
