How does Rakdos's return work?

[CARD="Rakdos's Return"] deals X damage to target opponent, so can I choose any amount of damage I want, or is it limited to land or some other statistic? an Example and explanation would be appreciated.

p.s "what colour is "lightning bolt" (anti-spam) I was stumped on the answer an till I realized it was a card rofl.

Lol @ the Anti Spam :) Lightning bolt is one of the best known cards! Well, at least I thought it was :P

If you see in Rakdos's Return it has an X in the casting cost, XBR. So you pay X colourless (i.e whatever you can afford/want to) and BR and it'll discard X cards and deal X damage.

So say I chose to tap 5 Islands, 1 Mountain and 1 Swamp, the casting cost would basically be 5BR, so i'd deal 5 damage and make the opponent discard 5 cards.Hope that helps?
