Liquimetal Coating

A buddy of mine ran a deck tonight he was tweaking, but having problems with. It focuses around Liquimetal Coating, turning other permanents into artifacts in order to destroy them. It looked something like this-- http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=140303

His largest problem is that Liquimetal coating is the main card in the deck, so if he does not get one, he has to wait for turn four for a tutor to go off (I added the transmute cards to help). I suggested he turn it from a R/B burn into a R/U control, looking something like this-- http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=140308

The challenge is to improve either or both of these decks, or just vote on which you think would run better. Thanks for the imput!

This is the Liquimetal Deck I've been using at FNM for a change of pace.

Just added Wurmcoils to it to back up the win condition of the Dragons, but surprisingly enough, depending on one of the 4 Liquimetals to come out hasn't really caused me much of a problem yet. I haven't felt the need to splash another color to tutor or search for them.

My initial idea is to try and stall my opponent long enough to get the LMC out, and then start wreaking havoc on the entire board. It's definitely not powerful enough to stand up to the current run of typical strong Standard decks(anytime I use it at FNM, I'm about .500 for the night), but it seems to be a very strong casual deck. The key inclusions for me are:

- 4 Oxidda Scrapmelters. These are great at causing the initial wipe to an artifact, and they stand up to Pyroclasm so you can fend of aggressive decks.

- 4 Horde-Smelters. This is the primary win condition, as the Dragon's ability is going to also chew up artifacts and help in attack.

- Wurmcoils. While it doesn't fit within the "theme" of the deck, since I've thrown these guys in, I've been able to have a strong backup plan in case the Liquimetals aren't popping early enough.

- One-drop walls. More stall tactics, I used to just use Wall of Tanglecord but got hit hard by flyers.

I'm starting to consider switching the deck around entirely, and changing the inclusion of green to blue. All my artifact destruction can be done with other red cards (especially with the new MBS ones) although losing the dual nature of Naturalize and Slice in Twain is sad. Blue might be better suited to stall out my opponent to get the deck moving.

For now though, this formula has been pretty successful and fun to play. My best suggestion are the must have cards I listed above, and to make sure you have adequate mana/draw power. That makes the deck chug along nicely.

you cant run a deck based on one card without something to get that card whithout something to get it check this one

Ancient Stirrings
with 60 cards in the deck you get barely 13% to get on the first card or ancient stirings or liquimetal coating that is a lot, if in 7 cards you dont get liquimetal coating and get ancient stirings it s more than 20% chance to get one that is abismal and the decks holds i have it for fun and it works one prob though exile and memorice but the deck in extended works even better trust me.

What legality do you want the decks? (Standard, Extended, etc)

If Legacy, Splinter is the best addition you can make to the deck. Target one type of basic land, and Splinter removes them all from the game.

Liquimetal Coating + Splinter like in my once popular deck Land Destruction (Green)?

For some redundancy, Myr Landshaper can artifacize lands and Neurok Transmuter and Thran Forge can artifacize creatures.

None are as efficient as the Coating but may be more efficient than first tutoring for and then playing a Coating.

Exactly. It's such a ridiculous combo.

Thanks to all! I really like all the ideas put forth--I found the Splinter combo on Gatherer, it is ridiculous. I appreciate all the feedback. We play pretty casually, so extended would be fine, but as our guys are getting more competitive, we're moving a lot towards standard. Thanks again!

If standard is what you're after, I suggest trying to make an artifact hate deck with Liquimetal Coating as a way to turn things into a target for the hate. At least that's what I'd try to do :p

This is a 3 color deck that uses indomitable archangel to protect liquimetal coating. the rest is just straight forward artifact/land destro.

okay here's a currently Tourny Legal deck I've been working on. You're right by saying that if you dont get a Liqwuimetal you can easily get screwed, but nowadays decks usually have enough Artifacts to drop a couple early on even without a Liquimetal, and Viridian Revel will help you draw out the Liquimetals for later usage. I've played with this one a bit and it actually works quite well :D
