I'm Bringin' Aggro Back!

Folks, it has come to my attention that the art of a good aggro deck has all but died. We live in a world of combo and control decks. Anyone who has played this game a while will remember back to when it was unheard of to drop 100's of dollars to build a tournament level deck (that's right Jace Mind Sculptor, I'm talkin' to you!) Hell, they used to sell the decks used by tournament winners for under $20. That being said, I want you to build a Type 2 (standard) aggro deck. If you have no idea what an aggro deck is, I'll put this simply "Aggro deck is a Magic: The Gathering term for a deck which attempts to win the game through persistent, quick damage dealing. Usually these decks will use small, hard-hitting creatures to win the game."
Here is one good example of a well made aggro deck:http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=118731 (If you already have 4 goblin guides, this deck is only $10, and I've won 3 tourneys w/ it) so, there are several ways you could make this deck, you have tons of options. The only limit is that any card you put in can't be more that $15. Thats the only limit, and just tips before you start, various low cost burns work well. Also taking low cost creatures like goblins, kiln-fiend, and steppe lynx, and then buffing them with cards like bull rush and assault strope can make for a great strategy in your deck. Now that I'm done talking (typing) GO!

Hehe thanks man. I hope all of those meet the "no card over $15" rule. There's a few that come close...but I think are all under.

Glad you like them! :D

The place like that near me is called Jester's Playhouse, but they have a poor selection of singles, they only carry legendaries and rares

Well I've been busy but I guess I can put something quick together:

4x Llanowar Elf
4x Arbor Elf
4x Garruk PackLeader
4x Leatherback Baloth
4x Obstinate Baloth
4x Sacred Wolf
4x Primal Bellow
3x Garruk Wildspeaker
3x Khalni Hydra
2x Gaea's Revenge
2x Overwhelming Stampede
22x Forest

There you go, Mono Green Aggro. Enjoy.
I especially want to build this deck just so I can play a Khalni Hydra on turn 3 or 4. Could be very painful.

Do you realize how close that is to being Stompy? All it needs is a few tweaks.

so what's the difference between 'aggro' and 'stompy' ?

Yes, please explain for I am most confused.

Haha. Well Stompy is aggro obviously. It's a very special type of aggro.

Stompy means that you use mana to its perfect efficiency every turn. Wasted mana is "shameful". It's one of the reasons that stompy is so fast. Additionally, stompy is big and ugly for as low a cost as you can find. The modern day stompy staple creature is Leatherback Baloth. It has no abilities at all, but in my standard stompy it's on the field turn 2 as a 4/5. The first stompy staple was Rogue Elephant...a 3/3 for 1 green that made you sac. the land you used for it. As far as I know, this card is where stompy got its name. In a Simpsons episode, a "rogue elephant" named Stompy is terrorizing the town.

Stompy is obviously mono-green. (However, very specific Naya decks, I think, could arguably be considered Stompy...but that's just me)

Stompy also almost never has anything that costs more that 4-5 mana. The exception to this is things that allow you to cheat them in, or VERY RARELY things that are like...6 mana but are very powerful in the deck. Again, this is rare and you need to be positive it's ok. Even then, only 2 of them could be allowed in. There's been some in the past, but the new best one in my opinion is Khalni Hydra.

Stompy usually has lots of crazy pumps. A stompy deck should be able to kill someone with it's "mana elf" if it wants to.

Stompy has some consequential card drawing. What this means is it forces the opponent to decide whether to get hit hard or give you card advantage. Old school stompy used Skull Clamp. Now that card is taken up by Infiltration Lens.

Now, to go back to the perfect mana effieciency thing. This doesn't just mean using every last bit of mana ever turn. It also means getting the most out of that mana. For example, in most cases a 2/2 or 2/3 for 3 is thought of as 1 or "1/2" wasted mana. Or a 1/1 for 2 is another 1 wasted mana.

So when you pay 3 mana for a 4/5 like Leatherback...well that's 3 mana "surplus" and none wasted.

Hope that helps!

so...you just assigned a name to qualify efficient aggro decks and then added restrictions?

never heard the name elsewhere so this might be something unique to your circle/region.

I didn't assign the name to it. The first guy to make one did like...5 years ago. Stompy's been around for a long time dude.

I do like it. And like I said, with some minor changes it could become Stompy :D

Alright, well truth be told it's not as "minor" as I may have hinted at. :D

Still, it's a hell of a lot closer than many other decks...trust me. Here's what it could look like with the changes made.

4x Llanowar Elf
4x Arbor Elf
4x Garruk's Companion
4x Leatherback Baloth
4x Obstinate Baloth
4x Harrow
4x Primal Bellow
2x Garruk Wildspeaker
2x Khalni Hydra
4x Scute Mob or Vines of Vastwood or Giant Growth or Groundswell
2x Infiltration Lens or Momentous Fall
2x Overwhelming Stampede
20 or 18x Forest
2 or 0xOran-Rief, the Vastwood

Believe me, the changes I made, comparatively, ARE minor :D

"Long" relative to other things in MTG. Anyway, I still am quite surprised that you've never heard of Stompy until this recently.

But I guess now is as good a time as ever! :D

lol surewhynot, Everytime you make a post I learn something, keep on making those great decks, and together we will bring back the lost art of aggro/stompy. I remember way back when 6th edition was out, almost every deck you made was creature-based. That kind of deck doesn't exist much these days, which is why I made this thread in the first place. The other reason is because people seem to overlook these kinds of decks. Like I said earlier, I've beaten hundred dollar decks with a well-built aggro deck that cost no more than $10. (Also, I'm gonna see if I can make your suicide black deck, because I have most of the cards.) Sorry if thi s post is confusing, my ideas are just randomly spilling out.

Sometimes when I go through these threads and hear stories of the past editions, it feels like I'm surrounded by army veterans as they sit around talking about the good ole days.

"It was back in 7th Edition when I first came to Magic. Oh those were the times, full of good decks, good people, and no card was worth over 50 cents. Now you got all these youngen, whippersnappers with their Jace, the Mind Sculptors, and their Vengevines, and Mana Leaks. Wait a minute who are you people?"

Oh man dude...I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. :D:D:D

And let me just say, if you played through the years where Fae Tempo decks, Extraction, ****ING TURBO-STASIS, and Entomb/Exhume ran rampant...you deserve to be called a war veteran

Well, hopefully this old vet can show you "wippersnappers" a thing or two, eh? :D

(Seriously, I'm still laughing)
