Prevent Damage/ Infect

If you play an ability such as "Prevent next one damage that would be dealt to target creature this turn," does that prevent a -1/-1 counter from being placed on a creature as result of combat damage by an opposing creature with infect?

yes, infect/wither is a type of damage, it still follows all the rules that affect damage, such as prevention.
