question about the damn stack

quick question....say i use eye of ugin's ability to search for whatnot. and in response, my opponent destroys my eye of ugin...do i get the 7 mana back to use for something else?

No, the mana is used when you cast the spell

1) you pay 7 mana and tap Eye of Ugin to put it's effect on the stack
2) your opponent responds by destroying Eye of Ugin this effect goes on the stack as well (lets say he uses Tectonic Edge)
3) the stack resolves

- first the land destruction effect resolves destroying Eye of Ugin
- then the "Search your library for a colorless creature card..." resolves and you do exactly that.

It's not like the effect was countered, you just lost a land that's all.
