no, your creature does not die because you have destroyed theirs before they have the chance to get to the damage step.
think of it this way: there's 4 steps to the combat phase. declare attackers, declare blockers, spells, calculate damage.
Rapacious One would be destroyed in the spell step before damage calculation will happen and thus there is no damage dealt to your creature.

Actually that's partially incorrect, instants can be played inbetween each of those steps as priority passes around. Small difference but pretty important when it suddenly becomes very important that one of the attacking creatures absolutely must be exiled right now.

yup:
-declare attackers
-instants played in reaction
-declare blockers
-instants played in reaction
-resolve damage

really??? i thought you couldn't pump after declaring attackers anymore....i'll have to remember that.
for example: attack with 3 creatures, defender has 2 blockers, unblocked creature is pumped with a giant growth in response. that would work right?

Actually that's the fundamental concept behind the Ninjitsu mechanic and a major strategy with creatures such as the Immaculate Magistrate.

because he doesn't know the basic rules of the game?
Your friend is probably confused by the new rules introduced with the release of M10. Damage is no longer put on the stack (damn wizards to hell for that). You can still pump creature but you can no longer have them deal damage then remove them from combat before that damage resolves.
