Deck Challenge: Blue-White for New Player

Hey Guys,

I'm new to MTG and just found this place yesterday. I'm still figuring this stuff out and am looking for some help from you guys :)

Despite having fun playing the game, I have been somewhat terrible at making up decks so far. I would really appreciate some help with making up a deck or two. I quite like playing white and blue, so that would be the focus I'd like, but like I said I'm new and may not have the best ideas, so I'm open to some other options if you feel like explaining things to me :)

I primarily have ROE cards, and in white and blue I have everything except Gideon, and while I do have multiples of most of them, I don't have full play sets of them all....but that can be resolved easy enough for some cards. I started at the end of WorldWake so I do have some of that but not everything...I do have a Jace though and would like to incorporate him if possible. I realize this may be somewhat limiting, but its what I have to work with right now.

Thanks in advance for all your help, I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with. Hopefully I can take these to FNM this week :)

Oh, btw, can someone please explain to me the "sideboard" thing? I've seen it used in some of the deck lists but don't know what it is.

Thanks again

something your resources should be able to create.

kinda alot of rares, just trade what you dont have out for other cards, deprive, lay bare, narcoleptsy, or more guard dutys should be good.

the side board is 15 cards that you can exchange with cards in your deck between games

Shawnr3150's suggestion involved Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
That is a $50 card. Don't run it unless you are SERIOUS about this game.
The sideboard of a deck is usually color-specific cards that you would only run agains some people. For instance, Boil is a card that destroys all islands in play. Well, obviously this is useless unless your opponent is running islands. But if you sideboard it, then after the first of 3 games, you can say "I didn't know you had lots of islands, but now I do know. Therefore, I'll exchange 4 cards in my main deck for 4 Boils in my sideboard." Most professionals have sideboards, but it's not required.

I am not much of a standard deck builder but seeing as you are a beginner I think this deck maybe a good start:

I also would like to welcome you to MTGVault and Magic the Gathering.
Hope the deck is good enough for FNM.

If you start posting the decks you play with on this site many of us will gladly help you improve it.

Thanks for the responses guys, I appreciate the welcome and deck ideas. They all look pretty good, I'll just have to play around with them a little to make them work if I don't have all the cards. The biggest change seems to be I have been playing with a lot of different cards in my decks and these decks all seem to use less variety but higher quantities of each.

I took my previous white-blue deck and even just adding some of the ideas you guys gave seemed to make it play better last night, now I know a few cards I need to try to get more of. I didn't realize it was like going back to school to learn this game hehe.

Can someone possible also explain to me how the planeswalkers work with their varying powers...how do you make them have more/less life?

Thanks again guys, I hope to become a contributor here as I learn more.

Plainswalkers don't have life like regular players do, they have loyalty counters. You take them off or add them according to the abilities on the card but, once they hit zero your planeswalker dies. You may do their abilties only once a turn and only during the main phases on your turn because their abilities are considered sorceries.

Hey - if you trust a Goblin as your guide then check out this :manau::manaw:deck:

Deck link: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=61726

Depending on who you are playing wait to play your one drop Hedron Crab on turn two - against Green drop a crab on turn one followed by Halimar Excavator. Then start your Crab Bake! Play a Land or an Ally to mill your opponent's deck - be sure to check out their cards in the discard pile - I'm a goblin and can't remember them anyway but it sure annoys them. Spice it up by using Ruin Ghost's land trick or invite more Allies to the Bake with Join the Ranks. If your allies desert you or you run out of crabs then its time to Traumatize. Play against a lot of burn or black creature removal - then try starting with Sejiri Steppe - gives a targeted creature protection from any color with the Ruin Ghost's exhile land trick. Runed Servitor is cool - side it in after they remove their artifact and enchantment hate.

Thanks Tokens'R'Us for answering the question about Plainswalkers, I appreciate it and now I get it.

Goblinguide, I like some of the ideas in the deck you created. There were a number of Zendikar cards in there and I have WW and ROE but I like some of the cards you included in there and will have to track some of them down to add to my resources so I can create a deck like this. Thanks.
