MTG Vault Deck Challenges
Beginner Decks
Some time ago I started to make decks to teach magic to some persons, who never have played something similar before.
After a catastrophic start I altered my personal restrictions for starter decks. It might have been an overhasty step, because other players I taught to play never behaved that clumsy as those first, but I did so, and so my decks look what they are looking today.
I would now like to see with which beginner/starter decks you can come (or already came) up with.
Please make sure that you include a deck and how-to play description.
General restrictions (These have to be meet by every deck posted here)
Legality: Standard, Pioneer or Modern ... I never was a huge fan of standard, due to the rotation, but since the starter-tournaments became standard, it could be necessary to build the starter-decks with standard legality. Modern would have the most widespread access to affordable cards, but pioneer might be more interesting for newer players, because getting your hand on old cards can be time consuming or expensive.
Estimated Deck Value/ Price:: Under 50$ Mid value, without basic lands. I think 50$ is a good value, and something a new player should be willing to invest. to get a good deck, that might even be upgradable. The official decks sold ad my local gaming store cost around 20-40 bucks, and we all know that you need at least two of them, to throw together a descent deck. I did choose the mid value here on MTGVault, because by using this you a 90% chance that, when buying the deck, you will pay this price, or even less. If you want to auto-exclude basic lads from your decks price, use lands from e.g. M19. Make sure all the other cards you're using have a price!

As the notifications on the forum still don't work (Gary and Ian have other things to do, who know's what...) if you want to leave comments, and make sure I get a notification, you could use my messageboard:

I will try to look here at leasts every one or two days in the next month.

Sounds like a fun contest. I think this deck is pretty beginner friendly, and it's all standard legal except for Arcane Sanctum.

[[Silverquill Command]] might be a little hard to judge, what to choose. Also the cards contain a lot of rule-text, but most of it is dungeon-related, and I guess if you manage to explain this mechanic well enough, it should be fine.

Not sure this madness deck qualifies as beginner, but kept it modern and under $50.

You will have to explain the madness keyword thoroughly for beginning players... not only how it's rule works exactly, but also how it is best used. But beside from that, as the deck features very few other complex cards/ mechanics, it should work fine.

I have always liked the idea of building a deck that is easy to pick up and learn to play magic with. here is my go to deck for teaching new people the game. it isn't fancy, or particularly powerful, but it is straightforward and easy to understand. either the cards have reminder text or the abilities are simple to explain, or both.

Saw it, looked at it, commented it :)
The reminder text for "normal" abilities, like vgilance or lifelink, can be found quite often when using cards from the core sets (M20, M19, and so on) or some special editions like Game Night or the Starter Sets.

yes, I had been trying to find cards with reminder text. still need one for trample, on a beefy artifact creature. a bit of an ask but that is the last creature now that doesn't have it. the Aerial Responder being technically the other, as the Game Night version has reminder text for lifelink and vigilance, but not flying... for some reason...??? and Griffin Sentinel also doesn't have a version with reminder text for flying. but I think that enough of the creatures have it that it shouldn't be an issue.
and thank you for the comment. :) always like having feedback and helpful critique.

M20 [[Skyhunter Prowler]] could be an option to solve the reminder text for [[Griffin Sentinel]].
Tenth Edition [[Colossus of Sardia]] would be the only artifact to have a reminder text on trample, tough [[Prized Elephant]] could be used
In general there are few new cards that have a reminder text on flying, and even fewer for trample, most that have this text seem to be Tenth Edition or earlier.
I'm looking at MTGVault two or three times a day, to see if there are new decks I can comment on (Description), and when I see the red number on top, I always get euphoric, because there's an answer, someone wants to talk about magic or something else. But sadly, this doesn't happen as often as I would like to.
