question about cards that subtract attack and toughness (noob question)
If I were to use a card (not attacking) that did -5/-5 to a creature that had 4/4 would that card be destroyed?

Simple answer: It will be put into the graveyard.
Complexe answer: No it would not be "destroyed", this name is reserved for effects that say 'destroy XYZ' like Doom Blade. The toughness would be lowered to 0 and thus the card it is simply put into the graveyard (StateBasedAction).
The difference between 'destroy' and this is important when the creature have the ability's 'regeneration' or 'indestructible' as a -X/-X effect prevents both from activating.
