I wanted to play standard with the RUG Sarkhan and this is where I landed. The idea is to ramp into a 4-drop on turn 3 and follow up with a 5-drop on turn 4. Ugin, Atarka, and Dromoka are monsters and can be completely game changing. The white splash is just for Dromoka, and with the current set up all I had to give up was a pair of scry lands for a pair of tri-lands (not too much really).
This deck plays out similarly to most ramp decks. Instead of using elvish mystics, for 3 mana on turn 2, I wanted to have sturdier mana dorks, so I am shooting to ramp into Thunderbreak, Shaman, Surrak, Chandra, or Kiora on turn 3 and into a Sarkhan or Whisperwood by turn 4. Use the big bombs to close out close games.Against aggro, Courser and caryatid really do work and dropping whisperwoods and thunderbreaks early are key to stabilizing and taking over. For the midrange and control matchups this deck tries to just overload their removal with strong threats and, after the removal has dried up just win with the remaining gas. Sideboard options:Stroke, denial, dancer, perogative, and keranos come in against control. Losing mana dorks and wild slashes.barrage, strike, and sometimes roast come in against aggro. Losing denials, kioras, and sometimes a shaman and a surrak.perogative, denial, stroke, and hornet queen come in against midrange. Losing dromoka, mono red sarkhan, and either Surrak or whisperwoods as the situation calls for it.
