So this deck is my current modern deck exactly as i play it. At my local shop, everyone plays the same couple of decks that aren't original at all. they watch the star city games opens and then copy their decks from the top 8. I refuse to be one of those guys so I am determined to create an original deck list that isn't super popular.I've had this deck for awhile and have been tweeking it over time. so I'm looking for help to make it competitive enough to take down grixis and jund death shadow, eldrazi tron, collective counters and all the other copy cat decks out there.
The bright side to playing something different then the "meta" is i usually catch people off guard on game one and often win. its game 2 and 3 that get me. I can take down the tier one decks but not nearly as consistent as I want. Its pretty easy to play, use the instants and sorceries to keep the board clear and usually on turn 3 start building a board state. then on turn 5 or 6, hopefully drop a fat grey merchant. game is usually done by turn 6 or 7.

NOTE: Set by owner when deck was made.
Any advice is greatly appreciated! thanks ahead of time.I want to make black devotion great again! (via collusion of the mtg vault community) XD

Hi,Fetchlands + fatal push Arena with Obliterator Nykthos with everything Victim of night > Go for the throat Drown in sorrow vs faster deck
First thing I see is some odd MB inclusions, I would cut these to start:Surgical Extraction, it really is more of a Sideboard card.Dash Hopes, giving your opponent the choice is always bad.Imp's Mischief, I can see it'se use in some situations but I don't think it does enough unless everyone is trying to play Ancestral Visions. To fill in these slots I would go up to at minimum 23 lands, perhaps using Nykthos as a way to power out alot of Black Mana, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to make sure you don't get awkward draws with the colorless source.I feel like 2 Thoughtseize will do you good along with your discard suite, and I agree that Fatal Push should be in this deck as a 4x, possibly paired with Fetchlands to remove larger threats. In the threat base I'm not huge on Bloodghast myself, and would rather just fill in the numbers on the other threats like Phyrexian Obliterator and Relentless dead.I would also consider running some number of Liliana of the Veil or Liliana, the Last Hope for some powerful midrange options for disruption or recursion. The sideboard for Mono Black is awkward and narrow, the best options I could think is to throw in these kind of cards, which I feel are worth the slots.DuressCollective BrutalityFlaying TendrilsPithing needleRatchet BombFulminator MageNight of Souls' BetrayalDevour FleshOb Nixilis ReignitedDamnationBatterskullVampiric LinkOther then that I think I remember seeing some lists of Mono Black popping up maybe a month ago on Channelfireball and Starcitygames websites being played by some of the content creators, could be a good idea for some research on card choices and what has worked and not.
Not a big fan of bloodghast either. Yeah sometimes it will work with collective brutality. But I think Gifted Aetherborn is a better 2 cmc. Bloodghast must cost 0 to be good. And target yourself with a Kozilek suck.Maybe some Expedion Map if you decide to play Arena, Urborg and Nykthos.Honestly I am not a big fan of Gary. 5 cmc for something with unstable results...I would play Kalitas, traitor of Ghet instead. Like 2 copy. Or Fulminator Mage. Sideboard : Leyline of the void. Work well with Nykthos too.I also suggest to find some cards vs Burn. Discard strategy just don't work well if you face it.
Thanks for all the advice guys. I'm looking at alot of these improvements and they make total sense. I just needed some other sets of eyes to see what I couldn't.
