debate aside, you will also want a 4 four of funeral charm for elves and bobs, as well as instant discard

true enough, but you could also deny the early game by adding removal, artifact hate, grave hate for dredge. as for the turn one targeted discard, you can use duress to nick an expedition map, stirring, and scryings too. you could cut them both out of the mix for a four of duress, despise and after you got the keys, just use wrench minds for that.
I Have also played 8-rack for a while, but i play budget, so i might be a little biased towards distress. but the whole point of 8-rack is to drag out the game and whittle down the opponent little by little. it would be a different story if something like 12-Rack was the deal, because its faster. but i think that since you want to drag the game on, distress is better. you could also run duress and despise as well for the same effect. I Just think that thoughtsieze and IOK are overrated.
but IOK has the restriction of CMC 3 or less. that means you can't take out things like ulamog or other eldrazi, or even half decent beaters. and in a mono black deck, you won't (or shouldn't at least) have a problem with mana.
cost drops by about $17, and it doesn't have any restrictions. it targets everything but lands. no cmc restrictions, and no life cost.
use drown in sorrow instead of flaying tendrils
i suggest sangromancer and distress in stead of IOK. more lands
I Personally Think that distress is better than both IOK and thoughtsieze. its better every way except for mana costs.
