Deck Description

The first iteration of this deck is one of the first decks I made on my own without some sort of template already provided for me. I do have a lot of decks that are budget twists on top-tier decks and I have my pet projects but this deck is one that I've been tinkering with for a long time. Initially, I had a mix of creatures and enchantments that I would flicker using [[Venser, the Sojourner]] and [[glimmerpoint stag]]. Since that first iteration there have been some changes and upgrades that just made sense. [[Oblivion ring]] gave way to [[detention sphere]], etc etc. Then they gave detention sphere a body in [[deputy of detention]]. I made the move away from enchantments at this point, and replaced glimmerpoint stag with [[restoration angel]].

How to Play

The idea is to use and reuse ETB abilities to gain life and card advantage while generating my own threats, removing my opponents key pieces, and getting enough power on the board to push lethal through either piecemeal or preferably all at once using fliers or Venser's -1 ability.

Deck discussion for Speak Friend and ETB

Even with 24 lands, this deck seems too top heavy to me. There are plenty of 1 and 2 drop instants and sorceries that help speed things up and up the control factor, both of which would go a long way. And, assuming the budget isn't an issue, then you can use snapcaster and/or torrential gearhulk, the kings of blink effects.

Another thing to consider is to make an eldrazi displacer build, or meld it into a green, blue, white so you can take advantage of the fantastic green etb boys.

Just my thoughts

Snapcaster Mage is way outside my budget and this deck has zero instants or sorceries to flash back even if I could afford to add a playset. Gearhulk would make no sense for the same reason. Every creature I would have to remove to make room for instants and sorceries would mean less tools to use Restoration Angel and Venser on, and less stuff I can resurrect with Sun Titan. With a completely different vision and strategy in mind I could build a deck to abuse instants and sorceries but this is meant to be a creature deck.

I do generally agree with the sentiment that this deck could use methods to speed it up or do a better job of delaying the game than is afforded by just gaining life and banishing their creatures. I'd love to hear of any suggestions that play into my strategy without replacing said strategy. Spine of Ish Sah is on the chopping block for sure. It would hold up better in a deck that runs Glimmerpoint Stag or Flickerwisp but it's interaction with Venser alone is not sufficient grounds for inclusion. If I remove those and whittle down to 23 lands that's three available slots. Maybe run one fewer mulldrifter and add a playset of Spellstutter Sprite?

Eldrazi displacer is really, really good. Thank you for pointing it out.

You know, if I had a playset of Noble Hierarch collecting dust I would add green and abuse the everloving heck out of Acidic Slime!

I'm not sure how much I can help as things are. The problem is sort of systemic with what you're trying to do, as blue and white don't really have any cheap critters you want to flicker. All the good ones are 3-drops, so it will take several turns to functionally flicker them, and the deck wont' hit its stride until much later in the game. This gives opponent all the time in the world to dismantle what you are trying to do and to get his plan in gear. In every build in modern you're going to see path to exile, fatal push, lightning bolt, or the like sniping out what you need before you have time to flicker them to safety.

I understand you want to go for an all-critter build, but in modern with WU on a budget I just don't see it happening.

Is there some reason you're opposed to augmenting this build with some instants or sorceries? 4 path to exiles and 4 opt/sleight of hand would go a long, long way to getting done what this deck needs to get done, and you would still have a primarily critter-based flicker.

If you do end up wanting to press on with the critter-only build, I would say cut spine, mulldrifter, and metamorph completely and work on the build that uses displacer and thought-knot seer and primarily 2-drop and 3-drop flicker targets. Also, spellstutter sprite is an excellent card but it needs to be in a deck that focuses on faeries to really hit its stride.

I'd like to see if I can go an all-creature route with it. Agreed that spellstutter sprite is a little underpowered without lots of fairies to help but it does answer fatal push, path, and lightning bolt even as a one of. Adding path and opt does not protect my creatures at all, speed up the deck, or benefit from my main mechanic so I'll probably not add them. I do think that whittling it down to mostly stuff I can bring back with sun titan is sound strategy. I think that replacing lone missionary with Cathedral Sanctifier might also help. Eldrazi Displacer is a definite win in this deck and I will have to acquire some soon.

I really wanted to spell it out all the way but I'm pretty happy regardless. Thanks :)
