Deck Description

I am attending a PTQ event on the 15th February. This is a version of the deck I want to play. I have been playing around with adapting my r/g devotion deck to incorporate the BOTG cards - fanatic of Xenagos, Xenagos God of Revels and Courser of Kruphix. All too good to be left out of any r/g deck in my opinion. Unlike a lot of other standard r/g monsters decks that have dropped the burning-trees and shrines and therefore the devotion linked ramp I am keen to keep this as, for me it is still the best way to take over a game early on.

I am looking for any constructive comments or ideas... or destructive ones if there is a good reason why I am trying to build a deck that won't work! It tests pretty well against the standard mono blue and mono black decks that have been dominating Standard for a while but I am sure I haven't quite hit on the right balance yet... do I run with 4 Voyaging Satyrs and 3 Trees or vice-versa? Do I drop the Burning trees altogether to run another Fanatic of Xenagos and more Kruphix? Basically not sure... Let me know what you think!

How to Play

The ideal play is....

Turn 1: Forest and Elvish Mystic
Turn 2: Play a Shrine to Nyx then tap forest and elvish mystic to play Burning Tree into a Burning Tree (into a Burning tree in a ridiculous draw) and then use the mana to tap the shrine for 5 (or 7) mana and slap down either Kalonian Hydra, Polukranos, Arbor Collosus or on a ridiculous draw Garruk.
Tun3: Garruk, or Domri, or monstrous Arbor Colossus... basically you have more mana than you can use at this point so the next job is to get cards in hand i.e. Domri or Garruk. Or if you are a long way ahead you may be swinging for as much as 14 at an empty board.

Obviously this sequence requires a very specific draw. The Courser of Kruphix combines brilliantly with Domri to filter you deck and get a lot of land on the board so if you can have that combination out by turn 3 that is a great plan B. The key to the deck is mana ramp and then to get one or both planes walkers out early. It is conceivable to have both Garruk and Domri in plane Turn 4 with a courser on board too. This would churn through your land filling your hand with creature threats that are all playable with the ample mana available through the shrine.

Notable plays possible with this deck are Xenagos, God of revels combining with Kalonian hydra as soon as it is played making the Kalonian a 12/12 with trample on its first attack, should it still be on the board at the next round of attacking it will be swinging for a game ending 24/24 trample (16/16 due to its own counters and a +8/+8 from Xenagos) on the next turn. The other option is Polukranos, if you establish a decent board presence and have a couple of Voyaging Satyrs out with a shrine it is possible to be generating 30+ mana turn 6/7. With this you can monstrous Polukranos for 15 or more and essentially board clear before then swinging with him - if Xenagos is out then swinging as a 40/40 at an empty board potentially.

Deck discussion for Gruul Devotion

Interesting built... ...it's rhythm's probably not as smood as those wich run Arbor Colossus, Xenagos, the Reveler & less gods... ...tough with Krumpix along with the mana creatures, this could work well.......

Kalonian Hydra is not too great in Gruul Devotion... ...you also need more Polukranos...

Unravel the AEther is fine, but when a long match is on, the opponent might draw that card again & don't forget it could be close to the top after the shuffle... ...I prefer Fading into Antiquity instead, even if it's the 3cmc version of Revoke Existance & not instant speed, like AEther...

1 less Garruk is better... ...you need 1-2 Mizzium Mortars mainboard...

You need more red source... ...I also run 2 Gruul Guildgate next to the other 8 duals...

Ruric Thar is a must in the sideboard(2-3 copies)...

I don't know about Fanatic of Xenagos... ...it's powerful, but better in aggro decks, rather than Devotion-ramp...

There are other useful stuff to talk about, but I'd rather show you my version wich works well against every types of competative decks & won me 4 FNM-s already + a 2nd & 3rd place out of 6 tries:

Hey, thanks for taking the time to have a and leave a comment. I like your deck and having previously been running something very similar. Your build covers the flying weakness much better than mine. However I think my mana ramp would have been more consistant.

The changes are due to the release of Xenagos, God of revels. I think that this guy is the key to making awesome Gruul decks in Standard and out of it from this point forward. It has occurred to me to drop Nylea but when you have both indestructibles out it takes very little extra to trigger them as creatures and win the game.

I have run with Xenagos, the reveler previously but the combo of Domri, Garruk and Kruphix make for a seriously potent combo. I have veered away from Mizzium Mortars in the past because of the overload cost in Red (this is fundamentally a green dev deck with some red thrown in).

I take your point about the Polukranos, but the fun that can be had when Kalonian hydra comes down alongside the Xenagos god is just great and potentiall game winning if there are any other counters on board - hence the counter heavy sideboard (mistcutter, ooze). The reason for unravel the Aether is the flexibility it gives as an instant.

I have had some pretty good success at my FNM with my previous build but want to make use of the new cards and feel relatively competitve at the upcoming PTQ. From my FNM there arearound 1/3 of the players going to this event - it is a fairly competitive FNM crowd.

The main reason for posting on here was to get an external opinion of how to fit the Courser of Kruphix in to the build. Basically I am fairly attatched to the Nykthos voyaging Satyr ramp but I can see from the competitive decks that are emerging that Kruphix is a key card and tactic. Unlike many other decks I would like to combine the two tricks. The ability to filter through land while guaranteeing creature in hand almost every turn with a Domri on board is too good to miss. Garruk is absolutely a must have card in your starting hand (or soon after) hence running four. In this build in testing I have rarely failed to get him out by turn 4.
