8-rack is an old deck which has now be able to be ported into modern with the release of RTR giving us our Rack 5-8. 8-Rack is a black hand control deck with the focus of crippling the opposing players hand. After which you keep thier hand empty and let the racks take over.

Wouldn't Quest for the Nihil Stone or Nezumi Shortfang be better options for Shrieking Affliction? Also, have you considered cards like Geth's Grimoire, Liliana's Specter and Megrim?

I Try to run 0 creatures as It makes a lot more and targeted removal dead cards, I have enough damage from mutavaults/bitterblossom and the racks to justify not running creatures.Quest is just too slow most of the time as sometimes you can only lilly or raven's lock them out at 1 card in hand.Sure in some games it may be fast, but in most of the more grindier match-ups I prefer Affliction.Geth's grimoire is too slow and including it would cause me to have to add another land. Megrim is also just late to the party, by the time its turn 3 I would much rather be playing bridge, lilly, attacking with mutas or playing multiple cards to clean their hand.
I like Quest over Rack too. Here is the best discard deck I have ever played against:http://www.mtgvault.com/magiccontroller/decks/meanest-multi-discard/But, with that said, this deck looks very solid! Good job, sir!
Thought about self mill cards, are any of them Modern legal? Like Delirium Skeins. That is what my friend runs. It is Modern Legal. With Waste Not...and Ensnaring Bridge in play...if you actually draw cards via Waste Not...your opponent can then attack you. You do not want to draw cards with Bridge. That is where self discard comes into play.
Wistful Thinking Is what I would play if i was playing waste not and going B/U.The thing about 3CMC cards is that in modern on turn 3 its awkward if that's all you doYou have to stray away from cards that are only good when a certain card is in play.Do you mean dredge cards? I have a G/B dredge not list:http://www.mtgvault.com/viagrasaurusrex/decks/dredge-not/Basically it just wants to abuse raven's crime and resource denial. There are two huge reasons why i don't like Quest over Affliction of Rack and they are:1-Quest is a terrible late-mid game top-deck, if they are already at 0-1 cards in hand they will just play the cards they have and try to race you so you will never be able to get counters on it.2-You don't always get them to 0 cards, most of the time you have them sitting at 1-2 which is why Affliction/the rack is betterThat being said I understand why people play the card I just try to stray from situational cards. What it comes down to is: The decks low curve allows you to attack the hand early, upping the curve means they have more time to drop a threat.(we don't always have bridge)I feel the biggest changes that could happen to this deck is if better removal gets printed, we need a way to combat Affinity.
Nice explanation!
I like this deck, but a game I played a while ago put me off it. On turn one, he plays a Raven's Crime, so I cast my Loxodon Smiter! Hahahahaha. Went onto win that match 2-0, especially after I second turn played a Wilt-Leaf Liege!
It is super rare that anyone would have loxodon smite or baloth in their maindeck(besides naya big zoo sometimes) Every deck has bad matchups. This deck excels at picking apart combo, blue tron, twin, tempo decks, UWR. 50/50's are burn, pod, hatebears, deadmans ale, and acouple other random decks.Bad match-ups are zoo, affinity, boggles(most aggro decks really) boggle and infect get a ton easier game two if you land a spellskite or verdict a beefy creature.
Definitely, but I've found that hatebears really excels against this deck, especially with four smiters and three wilt-leaf lieges mainboard.
Honestly I have never came across a single version of hatebears that runs green. I know they exist, just everyone i face is mono-white using all the white hate bears normally winning by blinking blade splicers or resto beats.I have only seen smiter in naya zoo and baloth in mono green nyx., never came across a wilt-leaf.
Have you had any problems when you come against an opposing Leyline? Not too sure what black can bring to the table for enchantment removal but there may be a home in the sideboard for such a card.
Most decks don't run leyline(normally only like 33% of the field does) with mutavault and bitter blossom you can normally still beat them down, sure the game get's a bit more grindy but it doesn't mean we just lose.If they get a leyline out it's almost just better to drop a bridge and use your discard spells to empty your own hand.Lilly can still empty their hand and your fae can attack through your bridge making it not an instant loss.Yet again it is super bad, just not the end of the world.
Is this the competitive list I've read about?
Yep, the most streamlined version(some versions run acouple different cards like Blackmail or funeral charm) This decks best matchups are:UWRTwinany combo deck50/50:Podu/w tronBurnWorst matchups, Aggro decks and G/R tron.some of these are better after boarding, boggle is the worst followed by affinity.Basically if your meta is mostly combo/slower decks and a few pod decks this will be a great deck. The success of the deck relies heavily on meta and the deck isn't exactly cheap so if it doesnt fit in your local meta it may not be a good buy lol.It is a super fun deck to play, very skill intensive(the first few discard spells in each matchup have to take key cards and there isn't a match up where there arent aany key cards. Running 0 creatures makes it so you don't have to worry about making them discard any removal and leaves them with a lot more dead cards in hand.I once beat a U/W tron list while he had me in the mindslaver lock.
Holy crap, that's a feat.
its a fun deck to play, if you want to know more about the deck heres a good forum about its crafting.http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/modern/established-modern/491360-8rack-control-the-hand-control-the-game-video?page=182
Thanks. Mtg Salvation aLways has excellent information.
I agree, the deck primers are always super well done.I have read most of the modern ones not because i wanted to play the decks, but because i wanted to know everything they want to do/don't want to happen. Aslong as you stay in the established/proven pages you generally get good info as the decks have to actually place in events to make in on those pages. It's also fun to look at some of the brews people are making on the build a deck pages:P
Yeah. I'm a huge fan of brewing and rouge decks in general.
i'm still fairly new to modern as i have only played it a few months but there are some pretty sweet brew I have been thinking of(most reguarding Waste Not haha)But with bigger formats you sometimes forget how many cards you actually have access to:P
Yeah, I'm in that boat too. New to modern, and looking to break waste not.
