Deck Description

After teaching one of my friends how to play Magic, he showed immediate interest in purchasing a deck. I didn't want to help him make a deck that would rotate out of format, so we decided on Modern as the format to focus on. We discussed his interest in tribal decks, and I eventually narrowed his choices to two; goblins or vampires. He decided on vampires , which I was really stoked to build mainly because I have wanted to build it for some time. I will be releasing a non-budget version of this deck later with a significant amount of changes. There are so many interesting vampires to choose from, so feel free to suggest other vampires not seen in this list that you think could replace creature slots to make the deck better. Suggestions that plan to add really expensive cards such as Bloodghast or Aether Vial will probably not be implemented, as I am building this deck to be under $225.

How to Play

- This Mardu Vampire Tribal deck emphasizes tribal lords that boost all other vampires. Our lords, Stromkirk Captain, Legion Lieutenant, Captivating Vampire all offer an extra power boost with added benefits.

- The final lord in our deck, Vampire Nocturnus is our most formidable creature and our deck included predominantly black cards to take advantage of his second ability. When he enters the battlefield and the next card is black, we are able to steal games we might be losing or behind in.

- Smaller creatures such as Vampire Lacerator, Stromkirk Noble, and Dusk Legion Zealot provide effective early game action, and benefit from the many lords in our deck. Dusk Legion Zealot in particular gives us some card draw that allows us to manipulate the top card of our library to be black, which synergies well with Vampire Nocturnus.

- A full playset of Fatal Push and two copies of Terminate over Lightning Bolt in the main deck are mainly due to the optimization of our deck's objective; we would be mainly bolting creatures anyway, and Fatal Push/Terminate are better in that regard.

- Overall, I think the deck works well for its paper cost. The mana base is not sufficient enough for a three-color modern deck, so feel free to suggest dual lands that help with mana fixing. I have tried to minimize shock lands and have excluded R/B fast lands/fetch lands due to the extremely high market price of those cards. This deck's resiliency is surprising, and I hope this deck encourages others to create tribal decks besides the typical Spirit/Human/Merfolk archetypes, as there are several tribes that might be fun to build and play at small events, even if they are not quite as powerful.

Deck discussion for Budget Mardu Vampires Tribal

Nice mana curve, I think how the deck came about was quite interesting. You might be able to fit a Path to Exile or two in your sideboard with your budget of $225.
