Deck Description

Alternate Deck Title: "Marshall the Troops"

So this is a project I wanted to engage in- To make a set of 10+ super-budget 60-card decks that are simple, relatively easy to play, relatively easy to understand, and bring across the fundamentals of how Magic Works. We've since gone way past 10, with tons more in the works, and I've really enjoyed the challenge of trying to make these decks easy to play and understand, fun, and all under a $15 budget, sideboard included.

The main goal here is that you could easily build these deck for a low cost and use them as an easy introduction to how magic works, to teach a group of new players both how to play, and give them a sense of Why, a sense of what fun things they're getting into. These decks aren't gonna be particularly good, or even legal in any particular format if it stops me from including a card I think is good for the deck, but they should be fun and interesting without being too hard to get into. They should be an easily-accessible example of how fun Magic: The Gathering can be.

It's a serious Go-wide deck, with a hell of a lot of 1/1 tokens. I'm actually fairly seriously worried about this being too many tokens to keep track of, particularly because they come in Flying and non-flying variants. That said- They all have the same 1/1 statline, they're all white creatures, so that axis of interaction is consistent, and I made absolutely sure that none of them have abilities other than flying, and there aren't any effects that interact with subtypes like 'Soldier' or 'spirit' or 'human', so you should only need to keep track of two groups of tokens- the fliers, and the non-fliers.

As for budget: Maindeck cost is currently at ~$8 (according to the middle blue numbers on this very site under estimated value), sideboard at about ~$3.70, sliding in way under budget.

How to Play

So mostly this section is going to be notes on why I think these are good cards to learn from:

Going by mana costs- Doomed Traveler is a classic white weanie creature, and a sweet card, while Selfless Cathar is a great teambuff effect on a body that this deck is perfectly capable of putting to good use regardless.

Gather the Townsfolk and Raise the Alarm are solid go-wide cards that let you flood the board on-curve, while Consul's Lieutenant is a piker with first strike that, if it doesn't get blocked, for all intents and purposes gets a Glorious Anthem effect on it.

The removal suite of Reprisal, Puncturing Light, and Pacifism is my go-to for white removal in these decks, short maybe immolating glare, which isn't that good in an aggressive deck, with my usual setup lately that between the main board and side board, I'm trying to leave players room to customize their removal a little.

At 3cmc, Banisher Priest Rounds out your removal options, Attended Knight brings two bodies to the field, and Midnight Haunting gives you some fliers, all of which is build-up to Paragon of New Dawns at 4cmc, which buffs every single creature and token in your deck.

Manabase is meant to be a touch lacking, but also super-budget. I'll be doing the same for all of them.

As for the sideboard, this IS supposed to be a sideboard they learn how to use, to make their deck perform better in the right matchups, or just in general to customize their decks within constraints.

There's an extra Banisher Priest, Reprisal, and Pacifism, to allow for customization, as well as 3 copies of Harm's Way, because that card is sweet, but just complicated enough that I felt better pushing it to the sideboard.

Past that- Soul Warden will be solid against agro (and is like, 40 cents, so if you want to cut costs even further, Arashin Cleric instead), Revoke Existence for Ehcantment/Artifact hate, and Righteous Charge for if you want a temporary buff to swamp the enemy with.
