So my first attempt at an Orzhov deck that I could bring to a FNM game failed and I wanted to correct that. By failed, I mean I got 11th, which is bad in a 20 person tourney that I actually was hoping to make top 8. The faults were a certain weakness to aggro, so I decided to correct that by moving more into the roll of midrange so that doesn't happen again. There is still extort, but much less, and Debt to the Deathless + Crypt Ghast is a major strategy as of yet. Desecration Demons have been added for their potency of eliminating extra threats, and obviously I added boat-loads of removal (6-ish spells MB and 5 SB). After retesting, I did far better, and in a far more populous tourney. I got 13th in a 42 person tourney, facing decks far more menacing than I did before.
Round 1- Faced a rather odd predator ooze/enchant deck. It would be hard for non-regular removal, but my Death Wind was a bit unexpected. He used those Gladecover Elves and Stalkers as well, but they're not bad once Desecration Demon swings in his ugly head. The games were brutal, but I won 2-0 as a good start.
Round 2- The most intense game against re-animator, ever. All I did was kill his Thragtusks and Angels of Serenity all the time and stalled until Debt could hit for the 60 required to win. I won 2-1 because he "Angeled" through my Souls the Second Game and then proceeded for lethal. Merciless fielded for my victory in the last match, so it will stay regardless of how you feel about it, especially because of that great word "Exile".
Round 3- Oh, failure tastes bad. I face a Jund-Midrange deck straight out of hell (or the world championships), and when I say Jund-Midrange, I mean Olivia. She token swept everything and didn't let me play Nighthawks. It happened both games, and I lost 2-0. Murders never came to save me.
Round 4- At least it was a close defeat. RDW charged in and lost the first game because Blind Obedience made him cry (not really, you get it). Second game was really good, and he won by a SS to my Nighthawk, followed by a Shock and a hit to the face. Game 3 saw me fight well, but he top-decked a Hellrider and Swung lethal without hitting for combat damage. Saddening.
Round 5- So, now I was 2-2, and facing a buddy of mine and his actually impressive mono-green based on that green deck used by France against Hungary. The first game was close, but his ability to block flyers was, well, not there. The second game saw the sideboard in of Ultimate Price, and that in itself was game. 2-0 was my game and it secured me 13th.
So, I don't want to know how bad I did, I just want to know how to make it better. What are you opinions, please? I need to improve my deck to the point I am proud to play it. And if your opinion is that B/W Orzhov isn't an option, it is, yet argue against that. I want to know why it isn't an option so I can fix it. I only lost to top-8 stock crazy decks.
Against Aggro (it did alright) - (Sideboard based on their colors and abilities)
Set up defensive line.
Eliminate big threats.
Swing and heal to secure board position.
Get mid-game.
Win. Or lose, whatever.
Against Control (Orzhov is actually good at this)- (sideboard for more offense, Duress, and less removal)
Set up defenses.
Swing and heal as best you can.
Remove any removal-able threats.
Never overstep, field-wipes suck.
Be creative.
Win.
Against Midrange (Urrrgh)- (Sideboard potential in Pithing Needles, Duress, removal)
Attempt to kill Olivia.
Keep at it.
Hope it works.
If it does, keep up aggro.
Win.
Those are how the games I've played so far seem to go. Any improvement ideas? Please?
