Deck Description

History: "Birthing Pod" was banned in January 2015, but people STILL wanted to find a way to make it work.
Enter: "Collected Company" in Dragons of Tarkir.
Welcome: Pod 2.0...this only borrows part of that deck.

There are decks out there that ONLY run the infinite life combo with Melira, Kitchen Finks, and a sac outlet, but I think that combo is extremely fragile. Burn, removal, hand disruption, etc. all break that deck.

I wanted to find a way to combine that combo with another deck. Say hello to hatebears (a.k.a. death and taxes). For those of you unfamiliar with that deck, here it is: http://www.mtgvault.com/tleung84633/decks/hatebears-with-death-and-taxes/ In short, it destroys their lands and creatures ("hate") while making them pay more mana to play spells ("taxes").

But in order to combine it with "pod 2.0", much of the "hate" and "taxes" had to be removed in order to make room for more creatures. That's where Collected Company comes in. Not only does it help look for the infinite life combo, but it puts out your other creatures.

How to Play

Pretty straightforward. The infinite life combo runs on 3 cards. Use Cartel Aristocrat to sacrifice Kitchen Finks. It comes back, you gain 2 life, and it now has a -1/-1 counter on it. But Anafenza cancels the -1/-1 with a +1/+1. Repeat it a million times for 2 million life. Keep in mind: this is only ONE of the win-conditions of this deck. If you don't hit off this combo, you still have huge, beat-down creatures.

You have removal spells with Path to Exile and Abrupt Decay to eliminate any possible threats (not to mention Qasali Pridemage for enchantment/artifact hate).

Each other creature is unique in their own way:
Birds of Paradise gives you mana ramp.
Voice of Resurgence prevents them from doing anything on your turn, and replaces itself with a token when it dies.
Scavenging Ooze gains you life, gets bigger, and is slow graveyard-hate.
Loxodon Smiter is not only uncounterable, but is a FREE spell against discard spells (Liliana of the Veil, Raven's Crime, Wrench Mind, etc.).
Qasali Pridemage has exalted, and as I mentioned, hates on enchantments and artifacts.
Knight of the Reliquary gets big, and fast. Think about it. It grows +2/+2 in 1 turn by sac-ing your fetch land, get a forest/plains, and then sac that. All without losing a land.
Sun Titan basically brings back stuff from your graveyard. Depending on the situation, you make the choice of what to bring back.

Deck discussion for Pod Bears

awesome list, although I don't know if I would call it hatebears without leonin arbiter, aven mindcensor, or thalia. still really like the list though

Haha! Very true. I suppose there are only a few remnants of hatebears left. A few creatures and tec edges. It's looking more like an abzan aggro deck. Maybe I should call it abzan aggro pod. =P Thanks for the comment!

no problem! I think siege rhino could find a home here, and even auriok champion as a twin answer, that would be some tech

Heheh. Yeah, I thought about siege rhino, as with wilt-leaf liege, but the 4 cmc is what gets me since sun titan and collected company won't hit it. I agree, auriok champion would wreck twin and burn (well, any life gain heheh). I'll have to think about your suggestions =)

Interesting combination of decks, although I agree with your other comment about the non-combo creatures being abzan. What about noble heirarch instead of the birds (just for the exalted of course)? Also, tarmogoyfs? I know 4 nobles and 4 tarmos would probably break the bank and more than quadruple the cost of this deck, but hey. With modern masters 2 coming around the corner, the prices could drop considerably. I know they will still be pricey. Just something to consider. Thumbs up!

Thanks for the tips! Yeah, noble hierarchs and tarmogoyfs would buff the deck up with even bigger beat down creatures. Once I win the lottery I'll add those ;-)

I just checked out your sb. Now that you have access to black, how about 2 duress? Not only is it 1 mana, but its a giant middle finger to scapeshift, kiki-jiki, splinter twin, amulet of vigor, other collected company spells, any sort of board wipe (which would wreck most of your deck), burn spells, etc.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice to this deck. After play-testing it a bit, I decided to make some changes. Most notably, I am making it less-reliable on the infinite life combo (instead moving some of those cards to the sideboard, along with adding chord of calling to the sideboard too), and replacing them with a few more "value" creatures, such as wilt-leaf liege and sin collector. Made minor changes to the land-base, adding bojuka bog and gavony township.
