Deck Description

"Houston, we have a problem." - your opponent
This is the jund version of my smallpox deck. If you like smallpox, I have various versions: mono-black, orzhov, esper, and mardu (check out my other decks if you're interested). They are mostly based on maximizing benefits from casting smallpox.
This is much different from the other pox decks because with jund, you get access to bigger creatures and a lot more removal.

How to Play

Analyze their hand and disrupt their play early with thoughtseize and inquisition of kozilek.
You have a TON of removal, with abrupt decay, terminate, lightning bolt, maelstrom pulse, and molten vortex (which also helps prevent mana-flooding by having you discard extra lands to deal damage).
All the spells I've listed do two things. 1) with young pyromancer out, you get a lot of 1/1 elemental tokens very quickly, 2) your graveyard gets full, so you can play fatties tasigur and have a strong tarmogoyf out for early pressure.
As always, liliana is great for creature removal and making everyone discard cards (as with raven's crime and smallpox but you don't care, because you utilize your graveyard and can discard/sacrifice lands).
And that's where life from the loam comes in. You can return land cards to your hand nonstop, meaning you can continue discarding them to liliana or molten vortex. That's one of the reasons I upped the land count to 25.

Deck discussion for Houston, we have a problem

Hey peeps. Took my pox decks in a whole different direction based on the current metas in modern right now. I apologize in advance that this deck will break the bank at 4-figures, but hell. Cut the 2 tarmogoyfs for scavenging oozes and you cut the price by 40%. Let me know if you got any suggestions, tips, replacements, sideboard changes, etc. Any help is always welcome! Thanks!

Good job making this deck. The description is pretty clear, but ah, the price. I saw you said you can replace the tarmogoyfs with oozes, but what about liliana of the veil? She really shot up in price huh? Got any suggestions for replacements? She and the tarmos and the tarmos are like 2/3 the cost of the deck alone. Still though, good job on the deck.

Thanks a lot! Well, Liliana is mostly used for discard or for getting around hexproof. I suppose you could up the Raven's Crime to 4 to make them discard. As far as making them sacrifice a creature, you could either use Geth's Verdict or Dismember, but of course they won't be as good since they are 1-shots. Liliana is just so much better. There's a very good chance she could be reprinted in either a return to Innistrad or modern masters 3. Again, sorry the price tag is so high, but thanks for taking a look at it.

Pretty sweet deck. +1 from me. Obvious drawback is if they have graveyard hate. Also, if they chalice of the void for 2, then all your removal for it goes down the drain. You'll either have to leave 2 mana open or pray you get your maelstrom pulse. Still though, I can still see alternate win-cons with token over-run from pyromancer or ultimate-ing liliana. Nice deck, I really don't have any suggestions. Just be on the lookout for graveyard hate - nihil spellbomb, tormod's crypt, relic of progenitus, etc.

Thanks! Yeah, graveyard hate will wreck me, but instead of holding me hostage with them, I can force them to pop them with my abrupt decays and golgari charms. I'm not too worried about chalice of the void since it'll take them until turn 4 to chalice for 2. Plus, I don't see many sideboard chalices. Thanks for the tips!

I just realized. Since you're not going budget, any room for a few dark confidants? With 25 lands, you're average life loss would only be about 1 per turn. Soooo worth it for the extra card draw.

Yeah, I debated on if I should use confidants or pyromancers. I went with pyromancers to pop out tokens. Any ideas on what to take out? Or should I just replace the pyromancers with the confidants?

eh, you might consider taking out more removal. Maybe take out 1 bolt and 1 terminate. Keep in mind that if you're drawing more cards with dark confidant, you'll be that much closer to drawing the removal spells.

Yeah, maybe I can squeeze 2 of them in. I'll have to see if I can out the maelstrom pulse entirely...

I think if you're casting life from the loam and looting you might as well cut a few land for maybe vengevine or golgari grave troll, I quite like the troll here since you have Loam and Tasigur which also adds a little bit of speed to the deck, modern midrange isn't really my thing because I quite like combo in modern xD

Thanks a lot for your advice Gothy. Glad you're still around and haven't left the vault completely yet heheheh. Yeah, I considered vengevine and the grave troll, but I was afraid of turning this into a dredgevine deck. Yes, combo in modern is great, my favorite being bloom titan =)

Nice deck man. +1 Like. Here are my thoughts to possibly improve it.

I'm not a huge fan of Vortex in this deck since it removes cards to power up Goyf as well as Delve cards for Tasigur. I'd drop them for another Tasigur and a couple Scavenging Ooze.

I think you can drop Raven's Crime and Faithless Looting to go 4 of on Thoughtseize and Abrupt Decay.

You could also drop a Liliana and a Life From the Loam for another couple Lightning Bolt.

Finally, I think 25 lands might be excessive for your mana curve. I've definitely seen a lot of Goyf decks run at 25 but I personally think you could drop a few for something else.

I've got a fairly similar Goyf deck although it's Abzan/Junk. I'd appreciate your feedback if you get the chance. :)

Hey thanks for looking and giving the advice!
I wasn't sure what you meant when you said molten vortex removes cards to power up the tarmo and help delve. I'm just discarding a land card from my hand (which I can get back with life from the loam) - I'm not exiling them from my graveyard. And the reason I like raven's crime is because I can continually play it from the graveyard with retrace (and then get those lands back again with life from the loam).
Thanks for the tips. I'll have to playtest this online. I'll go take a look at your abzan deck now. =)

Ah, misread the text on Vortex. The extra lands make it more useable for this deck having excess to discard for damage. I can also see Ravens Crime being great for a Goyf deck so it mostly comes down to personal preference. Still a pretty evil deck all the same. xD

No worries. Still, thanks for the advice. yeah, I've been debating on some of the creatures. if I should split ooze with goyfs. tough choices. heheh.
