This Midrange Esper Control deck tightens its grip and control on the battlefield the longer the game goes on. Imagine Darth Vader doing his force choke from afar... well this is that deck personified! There is an inevitable combo of 3 cards that will eventually be in play:- Sun Titan- Phantasmal Image (which copies the Sun Titan)- Liliana of the VeilHow do we get the above "choke grip" combo ?Unburial Rites can be used to return the Sun Titan from the Graveyard to the Battlefield. Upon entering the battlefield, the Sun Titan can then return the Phastasmal Image from the Graveyard to the Battlefield - which upon entry becomes another Sun Titan. This 2nd Sun Titan entering the battlefield returns a 3rd card from the graveyard to the battlefield: this time Liliana of the Veil. With Liliana in play, she will begin her slow chokehold crushing of the opponents creatures as she makes the opponent sacrifice a creature or discard a card. Even if she dies, it doesn't matter as the Sun Titan will return her to battlefield when he next attacks!Cards that help us fill the graveyard are "Forbidden Alchemy"Cards that helps us Draw: Think Twice! There's a bucket load of removal, from board wipes to spot removal, that allow us to deal with early game threats until we stabilise. Even getting out a turn 3 Lilliana of the Veil and starting the "discard" process is ok, as it draws heat onto her and wastes your opponents time, gaining you tempo. (Think chess!)Snapcaster mages allows us to double the number of instants we have, as we're allowed to cast removal or counter spells from the graveyard once again. We have 12 instants in our deck - "virtually", we have up to 24! With the Sun Titans in play, we can return Snap Casters from our graveyard to get multiple re-uses of instants in our graveyard. Granted, instants are exiled after they're flashbacked, but you get what I mean. Land Destruction Combo:Step 1: Sacrifice Ghost Quarter and Destroy your opponents land.Step 2: When the Sun Titan enters the battlefield or attacks, return the Ghost Quarter to your battlefield and repeat Step 1.- Repeat until you've removed a certain colour type from your opponents board, crippling them from casting those colours.- With 2 Sun Titans in play, you could theoretically return Ghost Quarter twice (when the Sun Titans attack) as you can sacrifice the Ghost Quarter in between the Sun Titan triggers as they're on the stack. This allows you to remove 2 lands per turn.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Based on this deck: http://magicgameplan.com/blog/solar-flare-top8-scg-nashville/
Strategy:Many rounds will be spent playing a land and then passing the turn. In your opponents turn, you'll either be countering a spell, or removing a threat, or casting think twice to draw cards or Forbidden Alchemy to look at 4, keep 1 and discard 3. Forbidden Alchemy lets us set up our "killer throat grip combo".This buys you time until you can board wipe, and then start getting your game plan going of getting the Sun Titan and Liliana of the Veil into play.Turn 1:- Play a land - pass turnTurn 2:- Play a land - pass turn- Cast Mana leak in their turn countering a spellTurn 3:- Play a land - pass turn.- Cast Forbidden Alchemy in your opponents end step - discard Sun Titan or Phantasmal image into the graveyard.Turn 4:- Play a land - pass turn- Cast think twice in your opponents end step to draw a card.- Flash back think twice again and draw another cardTurn 5:- Play a land- Cast Supreme Verdict or Day or Judgement and clear the board.Turn 6:- Play a land- Cast Unburial Rites and return the Sun Titan- This returns a Phantasmal Image which copies the Sun Titan- This returns a Liliana of the Veil- At this point... the opponent is dead from here on in as they can't stop the 2 6/6 sun titans and planeswalker in play. The death grip is real, and it only gets tighter and tighter.
