The idea is to take the strengths from both the Izzet and Dimir control decks without any of their weaknesses. Red gives us cheap removal that does not necessitate the loss of 4 life and an instant speed boardwipe, but no edicts or lifegain or 0 mana removal. What Black lacks, Red provides and vice versa. The only price you pay for running both is a higher number of etb tapped lands, whether this tradeoff is worth it only time will tell. The current version hopes to leverage Snuff Out and Spell Pierce to beat affinity, while Gurmag Angler and Unexpected Fangs make winning exceedingly difficult for Mono Red should both land (a tall order sometimes). The only real source of card advantage is the Monarch keyword, so the deck does struggle to play from behind. But the abundance of cheap removal and cantrips exists to pave the way for an early monarch creature to be ridden to victory. The metagame is so tempo-oriented that only 6 maindeck cantrips can be supported, with a heavier emphasis on cheap and versatile removal. In control matchups you live and die by the monarch. Izzet control is entirely about the monarch for example, nothing else matters, don't try and sneak out a Mystic out there, just hit your land drops, build up interaction, answer serpents, and become the monarch.
Trade 1-1 while wearing the crown or ride a mystic to victory.Currently I am mostly gettings 3-2s in MTGO leagues. The deck is very jund-like in that it doesn't really have awful matchups (save for turbo fog and turbo initiative) but it does have some very good matchups, mostly in the form of slower Skyfisher decks, Golgari Gardens, and even Azorius Affinity.
