Times have changed, Gush is no more, Defile is a thing, and so is Ashes to Ashes, and thus, from the ashes, my first Pauper love rises again. With only 1 bad matchup in the metagame - Tron. Outside of devoting half the sideboard to beating it, I don't really see a way to make this matchup favorable outside of slanting the entire maindeck towards a more aggressive, Gary-focused, build.First-Sphere Gargantua... Where to begin? The art, LOOK AT THAT DAMNED ART! It is incredible, I want this framed above my babies crib. And then... it's a bloody 4for1(Draws 2 has to be dealt with twice)! MBC fell out of favor in large part due to being simply incapable of beating Mulldrifter (MBC, like half of the format, turned out to be simply a worse version of Tron). But now, with this hulking, walking, unearthing 4for1, AND a new catch all, always viable removal spell, the deck has an actual chance again.
You know the drill, get value, play Gary, win. There isn't much to it really. The main relevant aspect of gameplay is sequencing a string of 3 or 4 turns in order to have them lead to either a stabilization or an opponent with 0 life.As far as the SB goes, Ashes to Ashes is here to ensure that Stompy shall forever remain a good matchup. The old joke about Young Wolf being the bane of our deck is dead. And long live black coffee, for even warm asphalt can taste like victory!
