It's not full proof, but it uses the concept of cypher to bank on opening up your mana for counterspells to be used.
Just roll this scenario in your head. Turn one, drop a Favored Hoplite for 1 plains. Turn two, drop an island, play hidden strings, untap your mana, cypher it onto Favored Hoplite, then swing turn two. Deal 1 damage, cypher. Untap Favored Hoplite, and tap the enemy land. You targeted Favored Hoplite, he gets +1/+1 and is now a 2/3 with 2 open mana. They drop a land and lets assume they're gonna try and kill our guy. They spend 2 mana, you counter with syncopate or swan song. So you'll have your guy either way. Drop a forest, play unflinching courage on Favored Hopelite. He's now a 5/6 lifelink, trample turn 3. Swing, they may block with the bird. Trample, cypher. Untap two lands, and end your turn. Two open mana, see what they play, if nothing, drop a land. After that, just focus on keeping your 1 guy alive. Make sure mana stays open and you have counters ready. Cypher to untap lands almost always.
