I have been a kitchen table magic player for about 15 years. I finally decided I want to get into playing modern. This is my first crack at it. Red/Blue Aggro/Control. I am not willing to put out the money for Snapcaster Mage or expensive land. I may buy a set of steam vents.
The idea is to get out a creature or two and then shut down anything the opponent tries to do with counters and burn, each time giving my creatures more value. I also concentrated on working in card draw where possible so that I don't fizzle mid-game.I decided to mainly sideboard direct damage with some blood moons I borrowed from a friend to be able to come out with a pretty different feeling deck. Still a work in progress and will change depending on how it performs.

Looks pretty good to me. While my expertise is not red and definitely not blue, I think you've got something workable here.I feel like this deck could use a Chandra. I like Chandra, Flamecaller for it's ability to create little Spark Elemental tokens, as well as it's deck cycling of discarding your hand to refresh it. You'll definitely need the draw with such a low mana curve. I'd drop a Spellheart and a Swiftspear to run two of them, but they are a bit more expensive.

Thanks for the feedback. Any ideas about the sideboard? That is where I am really stuck at the moment. The deck itself works, but given that I have been playing casual I am not used to making a sideboard. I am thinking probably artifact/graveyard hate then maybe a bunch of burn so I can hit them with something a little different/faster?
Unfortunately, no. I don't have much advice on a sideboard because I don't tend to make them. But how I see a sideboard functioning well is covering the very specific deck archtypes that you don't cover within your main board and are most likely to run into. To you, a sideboard of artifact hate may not be the best if you don't play many people with artifacts. On the other hand, if your opponent has a deck that drops massive creatures, cards like (for example) Fireball would be a good sideboard option to clear those.Hopefully someone can send some advice your way regarding this where I've fallen short. Keeping an eye on this deck :-)
I'm not a fan of guttersnipe, why not delver of secrets? Other than that the deck seems solid, I'd probably run 2 spell snares (hits a lot of relevant targets) and 2 more mana leaks in place of remand, maybe 4 magma jet instead of electrolyze and 1 probe?
I second the delver suggestion, you have more than enough instants/sorceries to make the flip viable
Thanks. I will try out the delver. Why mana leak over remand?
Have you considered gelectrode? 1BR for a 0/1, tap to deal 1 damage to creatur or player. Untap whenever you cast an instant or sorcery. Throw a couple gorgon flails or basilik collars and you have consistent effective removal even for large creatures. Also, why not consider Chandra's spitfire, 2R 1/3 flying. whenever an opponent is dealt non-combat damage Spitfire gets +3/+0 until end of turn. You don't have to runs these if they are too slow.. but if your running control it should give you time to set up at least one or two of these guys.the spitfire can deal lethal damage out of nowhere. I would run it in place of spellheart. It less mana intensive and you will get way more power out of it.
I actually used to run Gelectrode when I first build the deck. He was a little slow to get out and easy to kill. He was very effective sometimes, but did not feel consistent enough. I still consider putting him back in sometimes, or sideboarding him. I think I would need to modify things to make spitfire work. I currently only have 7 cards that do non-combat damage directly. The guttersnipe can do it indirectly. I do like it as a sideboard idea, if I choose to run a bunch of burn sideboard and drop the control. Thanks for the feedback.
I just realized that those two cards could work really well together. If I read correctly, spitfire would get pumped 3 times by gelectrode, burn, gelectrode again... but I think I would have to choose to do it before the combat step?
No you could do it as an instant I believe. Say they chose not to block spitfire as 1/3, tap gelectrode, lightning bolt, gelectrode again, suddenly the spit fire hits for 10 damage. Also I think there is a new pinger from eldritch moon that cost 1R for 2cmc that basically does the same thing as gelectrode.
Yup. Just found it. Thermo-Alchemist.... and if you are playing a casual multiplayer game.. say four people?? tap him once and spitfire will get +9/+0 just from one tap. Lighing bolt. And spitfire will swing for 19. the only sad thing is that unless you have haste.. spitfire swings turn 4 at the earliest.... sad panda.
Gelectrode has been tested thoroughly to much investment. in the past and it ends up being too slow for it's 3 mana investment. If you do wanna fill the 3 spots from Spellheart with another creature I think Thermo-Alchemist is your best bet. Maybe even as a 2 of and Jori en Ruin Diver as a one of.
not that its worth really trying but for some laughs you could run traumatize with the chimeras..traumatize yourself swing for beats lol
I've been playing delver for about a year in modern now. My initial build had Spellheart in it, but it's just way to susceptible to removal (read: bolt) to justify the turn 3 play. My suggestion would be to drop the chimeras and the charms, and run +1 mana leak, +1 git probe, +2 spell snare, and +2 spell pierce in their place. The cantrips just function better, and you have a more versatile permission package with that build. I also don't think scepter is mana efficient enough to be run in a deck that really cares when and how it taps, and its hard for this deck to deal with anything bigger than 3 toughness most of the time, so you might consider vapor snag in it's place. Going to board, UR has a lot of difficulty against faster decks and decks like tron and affinity, so for sure consider something like the cards below2 grim lavamancer (aggro decks)2 molten rain (tron)2 vandalblast (for affinity)2 relic of progenitus (grave hate for dredge and such)1 hurkyls recall (affinity again)2 spreading seas (any greedy mana base pretty much)2 dual shot or forked lightning or izzet staticaster (elves and aggro)2 roast or lightning axe2 izzet charm (against slower or control decks)Your sideboard will depend largely on the meta at your local store or where you like to play. If the meta is 90% aggro and there are no affinity decks, then that will largely influence the kind of things you want in your board. If it's all control and tron, then you probably don't need all the aggro hate. The way you built your deck, with lots of basics also caters very well to blood moon (but I gather you don't want to buy expensive cards), so that might be something you can consider in the future =)Good luck with getting your deck where you want it to be!
Jace, Vryn's Prodigy; Snapcaster Mage, or Thing in the Ice are my recommendations to synergize with your spell heavy deck, but it seems you're aiming to be more budget, in which case I would like to suggest: Kiln Fiends, Assault strobes, Molten Rain (which has already been mentioned) or Price of Progress. Price of Progress is especially mean, being that the majority of players run mostly non-basic lands, but with your deck only running 4 at the moment, it could be viable.
Just a note, if you choose to run thing in the ice, it does not synergize at all with young pyro or delver, so its more of a "one or the other" situation. Price of progress is actually awesome; I'm gonna be trying that myself vs tron (I hate that matchup haha)Edit: Was too good to be true =( Price of progress is not legal in modern
Oh isn't it? My bad. Yeah I get confused these days, my buddies have slowly transitioned from Modern to Legacy/Vintage.
I run a mill deck, and I find Cyclonic Rift to be a pretty handy spell. It's a bit versatile that it can bounce any nonland permanent, and the overload ability is really nice when you pull it off, usually wins me the game.
I agree with others that Spellheart Chimera is the weakest link and should be cut. A few options are available which I believe have all been suggested previously as well. Vapor Snag as an easy cheap replacement which will come in handy in almost all match ups. Or 2 Spell Pierce and the 4th Git Probe. I have play test Jori en Ruin Diver as a one of in my Delver and I actually like it a lot. I've found TITI to be too slow and or clunky for modern. Too easy for your opponent to play around unless completely built around. Just my opinions and should be taken as such. Happy Casting :)
I've always liked Jori. I traded something to my buddy for a small pile of cards, and Jori was one of them. I haven't built anything around her yet, but I like her mechanics. I think there's potential.
There is a cool combo with Thing in the Ice if you're running Gitaxian Probes and Remands, that allow you to transform it as early as turn 3, or even earlier if you get a lucky enough opening hand, and they go hand-in-hand with Spellskites.
I completely forgot about Bedlam Reveler. He's really good as a 2 of in this build. I would -3 Spellheart -1 Izzet Charm and +2 Bedlam Reveler and +2 Vapor Snag.
Bedlam Reveler is better in a more aggressive build for sure. I think he's the right call if you wanna transition away from delver and build around pyro, cause you wanna cast as many spells as possible as quickly as possible, and he becomes a treasure cruise on a 3/4 prowess body. Maybe build a UR prowess burn deck? Could be neat, with all the super cheap pump and burn spells in the format.
Maybe consider Steam Augury or Faithless Looting. They're good cantrips that feed Chimera.
Thank you everyone for the feedback! I am going to try out this new build this weekend.
You might consider adding a 1-of Desolate Lighthouse. It will allow you to turn mana-flooding or "useless" cards into late-game threats, which can be absolutely invaluable.
Have you considered Assault Strobe? It gives you crazy mileage from creatures like the Swiftspear.I think the issue is that it's a bit slow - your instants can only hold back the tide so long. Maybe consider some beefier cheapies like Mage-Ring Bully and Kiln Fiend? They're usually pretty weak cards but with the with U/R setup they can really put the hurt on. Finally, Jhessian Thief is INCREDIBLE considering how $$$ cheap it is.
Version 4.0 up and running. Some slight main deck changes (switched in magma jet for spell pierce) and a working sideboard. It is performing pretty well at the moment. I am lucky to have a friend that had a play set of blood moon that he was not using.
Quite a few suggestions come to mind. It's hard to make the obvious suggestions because it would appear you're trying to run this with a budget. For a sideboard I would recommend spellskite, dispel, spell pierce, hurkyll's recall, combust and smash to smithereens off the top of my head. I would mainboard the lava spikes, skullcracks and burst lightnings. I would remove spell snare, magma jet and bedlam reveler. If you can find room in your budget for Grim Lavamancer that would be huge. X2 of them in replacement of your revelers. Of course, Snappy is made for this build, but I get that $50 ea is a tough pill to swallow. I have a deck comparable to this without a budget in mind. My original posted U/R deck on the vault isn't what I run in person. I love U/R decks, so kudos on a decent build for price!
http://www.mtgvault.com/yodebone/decks/ur-burn/ I kinda reworked my posted build to better match what I run in tourneys. Probably forgetting something, or quantities are off, but you can at least see how my sideboard works. Twisted Image is great for enemy Spellskites. ;-) Anyways, hope it helps!
Thanks for the feedback. I am going to try out the grim lavamancer this weekend. Also going to try maindecking burst lightning and cyclonic rift. I prefer burst lightning and magma jet over lava spike in the main deck because I like to have options. Magma jet also help me flip the delver, which can get me more than that 1 extra damage. I am sure when I lose a game by 1 damage I will kick myself for it, but it makes sense to me. Still waiting to make a real sideboard.
some of my thoughts on your deck - i would get rid of the vapor snag and just put in disperses or more rifts . yeah it pings for 1 damage .... i do not like the fact it is only creatures and you have a bunch of burn already. in certain moments when a winning turn is on the line or you just not out right loosing .you will want to put a certain artifact or enchantment back. your creatures really have no defense .they are easily dealt w/. you really need a beating stick . you have the spells to pump and get tokens out a bit ,but not enough dumpers to where they get scary . with the relatively low cost of everything. i would get rid of some land. for a deck like this 20 is not needed . that is more room for low cost spell dumpers like probe, slip through time, peek or whatever .side board stuff blood moon absolutely staysi would put in some tormods crypts, phyrexian revokers, and smelts to name a few
Thanks for the feedback. I made some changes and am going to try out the new iteration this weekend.
Hello! While I like Delver I find that he gets a lot of hate while playing him lol So, in most of my decks I've switched him out with either Stormchaser Mage or Curious Homunculus. I do love Prowess triggers. Plus flipping Homunculus should be no problem with 28 Instant/Sorcery spells. You can play him for a guaranteed flip instead of gambling (albeit a slight risk) with the Delver.
