holy isolation cell is brutallllll. never even thought of that one : O I reallly like that card. But I think norn's annex could do you a bit better. especially if it's against a deck that doesn't run either a) any white, or b) enough white to pull off a double white.

I've yet to construct a sideboard of mine, but I'm really glad I'm not the only one who saw the true value of glistening oil. That card will make aggro decks cry. especially paired up with norns annex and bsz. I was going to suggest it actually until I already saw it,

you're running white, so I'd feel obligated to run gideon.. but that's just me. Gideon holds a place in my heart only a true magic player can understand. He's just so good. By far the best planeswalker in standard. jace is alright, but he's not nearly as game changing as gideon.

I like this, man. You've got a lot of really good ideas that sparked some possible changes in mine. (well of course, mr. extraction, the one and only surewhynot :P)

Hope I could help at all :D

i really like the look of this. in fact, i was about to go and make a T2 extraction myself. but i can't understand. phyrexian obliterator. it seems like it would take years before you manage to drop him at BBBB.

It can, and that's why I just have 2. However, this deck is almost entirely B, so I can also rush him out if I have to. Remember, Standard is slow as **** right now.

I have to disagree. All the standard I've been playing against that aren't control decks are f***ing fast with constant turn 2 / 3 wins (latest turn 5).

Might i suggest a card that i am currently trying to work into a deck build with suicide black and that is birthing pod.

Bloodghast>sac to birth pod pull a liliana's spector make them discard a card.
Sac the Liliana's Spector to birthing pod>Phyrexian Oblitorator.

Wow. Never thought I'd see a T2 extraction deck. This is awesome. I'm kinda surprised I don't see Norn's Annex in there.

0

Permalink

Eh, I'm not liking Norn's Annex...and here's why:

Against a control deck it does nothing. For one thing, White is a control color, especially in the standard meta.

Against aggro it is even worse IMHO. If you don't pay the 4 life to make it cost 3 mana, it cost 5. 5 mana is VERY late game for aggro, especially the token-heavy aggro such as Kuldotha. To speed it out on for 3 mana, you have to lose 4 life. 4 life DRASTICALLY extends an aggro deck's damage-limit, which basically promises a win for Kuldotha and G/W aggro.

Finally, an aggro deck will be more than ok with paying say...6 life to deal you 14 after you spend 4 already. It's one of those cards that at first looks good, but then in reality is pretty bad.

Nice deck man XD. Never thought of going U/B/W with extraction but it seems to work very well. there is just one question that is bugging me: Do you think a deck based in extraction can be a top tier in current standard?

Ah I also have made a attempt at an extraction deck for T2, please comment and see what can be done to make it better. Here is the link: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=177444

I not only think so, I expect it. The current top decks in Standard's meta are all so fragile (extractor term) that the introduction of an Extraction into it will be a force to be reckoned with. Extraction is, and always will be, a very powerful deck type. Up until now, very few cards extracted...but then out of nowhere Wizards brings back the deck type with a whole slew of amazing extraction cards.

0
Posted 30 April 2011 at 02:39

Permalink

Yeah the extraction seems powerful now, but about the Mono black extraction, do you see any play for this deck? If so do you think it should focus more on the aggro extraction side (bloodghast, gatekeeper, nighthawk) or more on control extraction and have it's winning condition based on Grave Titan and/or obliterators?

0
Posted 30 April 2011 at 03:05

Permalink

I think it could actually go both ways. MBE has always been able to play either aggro or control. My buddy's MBE deck "Enigma" has a SB that lets it go between aggro and control, and so it adapts very well to any opponent.

Phyrexian Obliterator is unreal, so if I made a MBE, it would have that thing in both the control design and the aggro.

Hey if you are rolling the Phyrexian Obliteraters why not use Sadistic Sacrament and drop Praetor's Grasp? Just a thought.

0
Posted 06 May 2011 at 05:51

Permalink

Honestly, since Lands is no longer a threat to Extraction, and because Lands is not a standard deck, Sadistic Sacrament lost a lot of its usefulness. It's still a great card for dedicated Extractions, but Praetor's Grasp is just better. It's pretty much one of the best extraction cards I've seen since Seek, and is sort of like the aggressive version of the two.

Sheoldred would be cool here too, not that you'd really need her..

Only thing I don't quite get are the sideboard Hawks.. you using preator's grasp to take swords from Caw Blade?! That seems to be the only reason to play them..

It allows me to fight Caw, basically in the way you described. They're also just very good for fighting the more aggressive decks out there, as the hawks provide a pretty solid defense.

Using their own sword against them is pretty damn funny though.

That's the idea for the most part. This is designed to be played in tourneys against the current meta. I rarely put "tournament quality" on a deck, unless it truly can be in that kind of environment. This is one of them.

I'd be curious to see how this deck and the meta would adapt after that "damn extraction rogue" comes and gives everybody a good scare. I'm just not that familiar with the meta and have little experience with it, but considering I have recently become very interested in extraction, I might run a build and use it as an excuse to attend a local tourney or two :) Good way to break into the scene.

I'm putting Surgical Extraction in my R/U combo deck, I think I'm going to get some good use out of it even if I always have to pay 2 life for it. I knew this deck would be made eventually. Of course you would do it Sure. :P

I have one comment though - I'm not a big fan of Due Respect. It's a great card, especially for the draw, but I find it's really hit or miss. The land they play comes in tapped, but that isn't necessarily a set back. Unfortunately, everything must be compared to Caw Blade now, and if you Respect them (Or rather, make them respect you) on their upkeep turn three, they're just gonna pass and sneek in a sword or batterskull with the Mystic. I'd much rather run more Mana Leaks, or Into the Roil, cause that card is amazing.

Overall, the deck is amazing, but I wonder if you could make it even more streamlined? Just a challenge for you.

Thanks man, appreciate it.

Once NP comes out I'll be able to get a better real-time feel for it, which will allow me to streamline it and fine tune it if need be.

Due Respect mostly ruins KuldothaCry. KuldothaCry, and most RDW designs, use a "damage spike" style. It's very aggressive, and is usually what makes them so effective. Due Respect stops these spikes, which in turn, puts the deck's damage-limit out of reach and it can no longer win.

Due Respect also works very nicely on Valakut from my testing. The deck's power comes from its ability to ramp like hell, use the spewed out lands to cast into something huge, and then create a casting chain, so to speak. Due Respecting them when they spew out all those lands breaks that casting chain, and slows them down significantly.

As for CAW, Due Respect isn't ideal for fighting them, and I'll probably side in my own Hawks and stuff. In a few tests it slowed them down just enough to where I could put down Torpor Orb BEFORE they make it moot. Torpor Orb is amazing against CAW, but only if it's out before they use most of their low cost cards. It's basically a race...and Due Respect can help in that race, but as I said, I'd probably sideboard anyway.

On a side note, Inquisition of Kozilek---> Surgical Extraction just murders CAW, and I expect a LOT of CAW decks to start running Mental Misstep as a safety blanket.

0
Posted 10 May 2011 at 21:30

Permalink

I like this deck a lot, I'm thinking of building it myself. The only thing I'd probably change is remove the white (Due Respect and Wall of Omens is not something that works for me, personally) to add things like Archive trap, but that's probably because of the local meta.

Just out of curiosity, so when I test it myself, what would be the ultimate hand for you, and what would be the 100% mulligan hand (apart from all lands or no lands)?

0
Posted 10 May 2011 at 21:16

Permalink

Well, ultimate hand is pretty hard to say, since it would depend a little on what deck I was playing. So, let's say I was playing against CAW, since it keeps coming up anyway.

Ultimate would be:

Swamp, Inquisition of Kozilek, Surgical Extraction, Psychic Surgery, Drowned Catacombs, Torpor Orb, and Praetor's Grasp/Celestial Colonnade

turn 1: Swamp, IoK --> S.E.

turn 2: Drowned Catacombs to play either Torpor Orb or Psychic Surgery depending on what I see in their hand from my move on turn 1

turn 3: Then either Praetor's Grasp or Colonnade would be nice choices. One would allow me to rip out their Sword, provided I drew another land (pretty likely actually). Colonnade would be nice too as I could establish a solid mana base and have a good back-up flying defender for those pesky Hawks.

``````````````````````````````````
Worst hand could be a lot of things really, and depends a lot more on what deck I'm facing than does the best hand scenario. Obviously the mana burdened hand always sucks to get, but that's an obvious one. I can't really say for this one. =/
I'm looking forward to trying this deck out. As I said, I personally don't like the white splash (tri colour for me can be a bit hap-hazard. Looked at a few sample hands and sometimes I just want that single plains/extra swamp) but I do love this deck a lot, and I hope to see you in the top 8 of some event with this :)
Hey Sure, got another question for you.
How do you deal with the inevitable sideboard of Leyline of Sanctity? It seems like that one enchantment would shut down this whole deck.
I'm almost done getting the proxies done, and I traded for most of the cards today (Our prerelease saw a STUPID card pool. At least five Praetor's Grasps and I know of one person with the playset of Surgical Extractions). I can't wait to run this deck against my friends in the next tournament. :D
As it stands, the current standard meta will make L.o.S. a wasted spot in your SB the majority of the time. However, it is indeed a powerful defense against Extraction, and if it starts becoming more prevalent, I'll have to adjust my SB to deal with it. Some likely candidates -- War Priest of Thune, the obvious Demystify, Revoke Existence, Into the Roil has always been good to me.
Most likely War Priest of Thune would be my choice. I like that guy and he'd do the job.
Man, lots of feedback today for you Sure. However, my meta is probably quite different than yours, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Firstly, Isolation Cell was very underpar in the games I played. I almost always wished it was something else, and quickly replaced them with two Darkslick Shores, as I was constantly mana screwed (Throughout a total playtesting of five matches). The card is great, but at turn four it's to late against most of the aggro or Caw Blade even. I felt like more land was better, and it turned out much better for me.
I never saw a single Phyrexian Obliterator hit the field, so I took out one Wall of Omens and added in a third Obliterator. Coincidentally, getting BBBB isn't that hard at all, and happened quite frequently.
Overall, the deck was really fun to play, but never found a win con. I was confused at this, so I took a stab at making a list of my own. I'll be posting it with a link here in a few short minutes. I really want to make this deck the new "Caw-Blade" of standard.
I have to agree. After more testing Isolation Cell was a bit disappointing, and I'll probably scrap it. Torpor Orb has been great for me, and frequently became a problem for the opponent. It deals with a number of different decks in standard right now, so I'll probably put it in place of Isolation Cell. The good thing is that that frees up 2 spots in my SB, which is perfect.
Extraction vs Extraction is a very tricky match-up...and both players will probably leave with a headache. Basically you have to hope that you can cripple their deck more/faster than they can cripple yours. I have MM and Noxious Revival in the SB for such cases. MM obviously protects against a number of early game stuff, and Noxious Revival protects very effectively against Surgical Extraction.
Im having a little difficulty satisfying a win condition however; what exactly does it rely upon to win and get an opponent to 0?? Is it through Phyrexian Oblitirator, Geths verdict, Preator grasp////countering/extracting any threat? or is there a mechanic im missing?
Thanks,
The quote to sum up how Extraction works is "I win, because you can't". Now, that applies a whole lot more to Legacy versions, but it still is something to consider. Legacy is really Extraction's main 'hunting grounds' where two types truly dominate, Iso-Seek...the control heavy version, and PAL (Poxtraction Aggro-Lock) which is the aggro version.
Iso-Seek basically just renders their deck worthless over time, and most people end up scooping, if they don't it's usually a waiting game...
With PAL, it's more geared towards beating the crap out of them and using Extraction to make sure they can't do a thing about it =P
With Standard, it's a mix of both really. Control them and/or beat them senseless depending on the situation. I will warn you in advance that Extraction is not a "pick-up-and-play" type of deck, and takes a lot of experience over time to really get good at it.
Last but not least, you can certainly do a more aggro-based version of Extraction =]
