Deck Description

No sideboard for this one, but it's another mostly colorless competitive modern deck that doesn't cost a grand.

How to Play

Arcbound Ravager is the MVP, and it's mostly using Hardened Scales to increase the power of Walking Ballista and adding a bunch of counters to Ravagers to attack for a lot.

Oh damn, you're right. You'd think that I would know that, but whatever.

We can't remember all the details of the game.
It's why copycats will one day fail to play the game when there is enough individual decks in the game.
Some cards take a certain mindset to be played.
Take the infight between lightning bolt and seal of fire. Lb is in most burn while seal is in jund, and seal isn't always there to back up tarmogoyf. It's more or less an adaption against monastery swiftspear. But since swiftspear isn't supported by seal, burn players don't dare playing it, though it might give them an edge in mirrormatches.

I've been thinking about the pros and cons of modal spells, and only recently did I conclude that they will probably mean that inquisition of kozilek will get in trouble. Imagine how many cards inquisition is holding back...
(Your infect will certainly love to see the card go)

Every time we get new cards, magic is actually a new game, but rather than start all over, people stick with the known
Until it makes very little sense to stick with it, and they also add cards that they think make sense until they realise it didn't make sense at all.

In my long past I've seen how older designs suddenly resurface after being neglected for half a year.

It takes time for us to get those little details stuck in our mind, and then it starts all over.

That's why I am such a huge fan of keeping an extensive archive with explanations on why a card was used, what takes it out, and what has synergy with it :)

It definitely is a lot to take in, and I actually think I decided to go modern after the ban so I didn't hear any news of it. But yeah, it's a complicated system.

My guess that inquisition is going out is based on the assumption that you decide which modal side is facing front when you sleeve it. The current rules references are a bit unclear on that.

Found it.
Front face of modal has a single triangle, backside has 2 triangles.

Yeah, I noticed that. I don't think those cards count as lands when they're in your hand, though, but I'm not sure.

They only counts as lands when played or on the table.
That does mean I'm gonna build a modal mindshrieker deck just for the heck of it.

I know it doesn't fit the colour scheme perfectly, and it's ability is rather expensive in comparison to Steel Overseer, but what about Gavony Township?

I think that's a clever idea, most will have direct artifact hatred or removal to deal with ravager and overseer, so this would sneak past most hatred. I'm testing ensnaring bridge at the moment and three cards can cross the bridge, signal pest, ornithopter and noble hierarch, and they can sneak damage through by ravager and overseer, which is why I pack engineered explosives in main. Township would get past my current defences, though it's a onetime boost to the creature it still does the job over time.

Love this deck idea!! Have you had a chance to try it out?

I have been doing some playtesting with this deck online, and it's easily competitive in modern. I've seen some Hardened Scales players make top 8 and even top 4 in the Mythic Championship running almost this exact deck.

I remember the first affinity designs, back when frogmite, myr enforcer, disciple of the vault were played, and spheres and stars and thought cast provided the draw. Sure, everyone used the artifact lands, but when they got banned, the deck took on other directions until the ban of the opal. Has anyone tried to revert back to the older lore of affinity. I know there's a pauper version with an infinite combo somewhere.
