I was reading an mtg article, and someone mentioned a white/black monarch deck. It sounded fun, so I made one. For those of you that don't know, the monarch draws a card at the beginning of their end step, and if a creature deals combat damage to the monarch, that creature's controller becomes the monarch. I always work under a 30$ budget if I can. All the cards that directly deal with the monarch are easy enough, but I'll explain the other (non-land) cards. Blazing Archon, if I eventually get him out, stops creatures from attacking me, so they can't become the monarch. Plus he has flying, which this deck seems like could be a weakness (I haven't tested the deck yet). Fate Unraveler punishes opponents if they're the monarch because they're drawing extra cards. Guul Draz Specter helps with flying, and gets rid of extra cards they might have gotten while the monarch. The instants have various function. Preventing combat damage helps if another player would become the monarch by dealing combat damage. There's also some basic removal in there: creatures, and artifacts/enchantments. Ob Nixilis gives me card advantage, and can act as removal if need be. His ultimate rewards me for being the monarch, and punishes opponents. Hoofprints of the Stag helps if I'm the monarch, since I'll be drawing more.
