Deck Description

Welcome,
to my take on Abzan Elves in Modern.

The only major difference to other common lists, is the choice not to play Nettle Sentinel.
Comboing with Sentinel and Heritage Druid is great, but takes too much effort or luck to set up, while being little effective most of the time. Not playing Sentinel, opens 4 new slots that give us one more land to play, as well as an additional mana Elf. This makes mulliganing noticeable less likely.
Also we now can play the full 4 copies of Elvish Visionary (card draw- yes please) and we can feature a brand new card named: Throne of the God Pharaoh.

Throne is such a great card in this deck, it does constant damage if we draw it early, but can also win games right on the spot anytime during late game, just like an additional Shaman of the Pack. Everytime an Elf gets tapped for mana, it will do damage, even if we have to skip combat completely we will do damage anyway this turn. I highly recommend this card.

This list may not be as explosive as others, but very consistent even in grindy matchups.

Enjoy.

How to Play

Our worst nightmare obviously is Pyroclasm, Anger of the Gods, or any other sort of sweeper. Always make sure not to overextend board presents if not necessary . Often it is enough to let Shaman and Throne get the job done.

After sideboarding we have Burrenton Forge Tender and Selfless Spirit for a little more protection.

Sideboarding with this list is fairly easy, because Elves work just fine with 18 lands, so we can cut one. We can also cut Elves of deep Shadow and some Elvish Visionaries without giving up too much potential of winning fast.

If we need our toolbox creatures like Ooze, Revoker or Reclamation Sage, one Lead the Stampede can be cut for one more Chord of Calling to make sure we find them.

Deck discussion for AbZan ElVEs

Might I suggest a single basic Swamp and a single basic Plains. Besides helping you play around Blood Moon, it also gives you colour fixing off an opponent's Path to Exile or Ghost Quarter. The only thing I hate more than not having enough mana is not having the right colour mana.

As for your concern about the Nettle Sentinel + Heritage Druid mini combo, I can easily see Paradox Engine filling the role as that trick relies on you casting spells anyway. Doesn't combo well with Throne of the God-Pharaoh though :|

True, Paradox Engine fills that role, but i think it might be a little too slow. You are also right on basic lands, but mana is tight here and swamps can not be fetched with Windswept Heath. I guess Forests are key here, you can chord or company for any non green creature and we have Rec Sage to deal with Blood Moon.
I could see cutting one Blooming Marsh for a swamp or plains.
Thanks for your suggestions!
