Midrange Mill

by SoulofMirrodin on 31 March 2013

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (15 cards)

Creatures (2)

Sorceries (2)

Artifacts (3)

Enchantments (2)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

How to Play

Play Jace's Phantasm or Wight of Precinct Six early, then mill your opponents with either Mind Sculpt, Breaking, Hedron Crab, or Ghost Quarter combined with Archive Trap. Suspend a Nihilith and get it into play early when you mill. Swing for large amounts of damage with the Wight, Nihilith, and Phantasm, removing any threats that get in the way with Victim of Night. If you see any problematic combo pieces, powerful creatures, or removal spells in your opponent's graveyard, remove them with Surgical Extraction. Play Bloodchief Ascension too punish the use of fetchlands, shocklands, and spells or abilities that cost life early game, and then use your mill spells to kill your opponent and gain life late game. If your opponent is still alive after this, they will soon be milled to death. If you are facing a deck with creatures and/or artifacts with annoying abilities such as Affinity, Birthing Pod, Jund, Splinter Twin, or Melira Combo, sideboard in Damping Matrix. If you are facing a deck that uses the graveyard or library like Storm, Reanimator, Dredgevine, Birthing Pod, Melira Combo, or decks that run Snapcaster Mage or Lingering Souls, sideboard in Grafdigger's Cage. If you are decks with large amounts of weak creatures such as Jund, Junk, and Affinity, or creatures with shroud/hexproof/protection from black such as Geist of Saint Traft, sideboard in Infest. If you are facing control, run Defense Grid. If you are facing decks that run Fetchlands, Shocklands, Thoughtseize, or Dark Confidant, sideboard in Bloodchief Ascension.

Deck discussion for Midrange Mill

I would, but it messes with my creatures.

You need to put avatar of woe into your main deck, I personally thinks its a good deck, but I think you should use newer cards.

What do you mean newer cards?

Great looking deck =] I have a few suggestions for you, look into ghost quarter, it'll allow you to use archive trap for free while at the same time getting rid of a land which will benefit mind funeral. Also I would take out 2 wright of precinct six or mortivore and add in the 2 sword of body and mind to your main deck I think that would improve your deck quite a bit.

I like having some creature removal in a deck but in a mill deck it's not quite as important simply because your creatures are things like fog bank and can stop most all creatures from hitting you, so maybe if you dont want to drop your wrights or mortivore drop 2 go for the throats for the swords.... either way =]

But anyhow I like it

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not sure about the Swords of Body and Mind, but you might be right.
I'm thinking about replacing Go for the Throat with Tome Scour to get more milling in. Do you think that would be a good idea?

Should I add green to this so I can add Terravore and Lord of Extinction?

0

If you can acquire some I would recommend you definitely add Glimpse the Unthinkable instead of the tome scours, if you cant get those then tome scour might not be too bad to throw in haha. As for adding green, this is simply my opinion but I like sticking to 2 colors, especially in a deck like this. If you think you can effectively run a mill deck fast enough with a third color, give it a shot but I think the third color might slow it down and mill decks need to be as fast as possible.

I'd love to get Glimpse the Unthinkable, it just doesn't seem worth 26 dollars each. Would Tome Scour be worth replacing Hedron Crab?

I dobt know about replacing hedron crab, its a really good 1 drop that has that continous mill effect which is great

It might be a good idea to not use tome scour, cause I wouldnt take out the sculps either for it, haha it's a tough decision. Have you thought about duskmantle guildmage?

Yeah, I tried it but activating its ability was too expensive. It is a good idea though.

I'd agree with CHEWRIDA on the hedron crab. If it's unmolested it mills a hell of a lot of cards by it's own. I've tested it's range within 5 turns, and without fetch it mills an average of 8.5 cards if left alone.

By the way, you wrote somewhere about a milling deck I should comment on!
I planned to click on your name to find it, but I only see this deck?
Could you do me a favor and link it again, or perhaps constuct it in mtgvaults?

Hmm, since this is your post, I wont copy/paste the reasons why leyline can be played in creatureheavy decks :)

-1

You see I wouldnt put the leyline in this deck either, The leyline is a good card you should build a deck around, but if the deck isnt built around it then it wont be very useful. In this deck it'll hurt more than help him, especially if he downs all his creature to having less of each copy in the deck. This deck will excel with his creatures out, he doesnt need to minimize how many jaces phantasms, hedron crabs, and wright of precinct six he has out.

CHEWRIDA:
Well, I've argued for putting the leyline between critters so much that I will have to prove my arguments through building such a deck!
I will go to the drawingboard for a while and do just that. If it fails more than usual I'll concede a win to SOULOFMIRRODIN on this one :)

SOULOFMIRRODIN:
Two things can happen with glimpse the unthinkable.
1: The price will escalate now that they've made a second version of it!
2: The price will fall because they made a second version of it!

I think it will be nr 1 that wins out, so get 8 copies of the new one while it's cheap, then trade the 4 extra's for the original when it's been priced higher after a while :)

They were bit on the expensive side, and somebody did the math and against a normal deck they only mill around 9 cards. I replaced them with the new breaking/entering.

I bought this deck and had 12 matches with it
Matches 1-3 were against a white-green exalted deck. I crushed it with Jace's Phantasm first game, was crushed by a Loxodon Smiter second game, and I came close but ran out of removal third game after having to Gof for the Throat a Loxodon Smiter and Knight of the Reliquary and was unable to stop a Loxodon Smiter with Rancor, Double Strike, and +2/+2.

Matches 4-5 were against a monoblue affinity deck. I failed miserably because of my lack of artifact removal. Because of this, I am replacing the Go For the Throats with Doom Blades.

Matches 6-7 and 11-12 were against red-white-blue control/aggro decks. I lost all of those matches, twice because I didn't have enough colored mana and the other 2 because of my opponent playing Geist of Saint Traft. Because of this, I am replacing the Hex Parasites and a Lightning Greaves in the sideboard with Geth's Verdict, which should be able to stop the Geist. It also will help if I run into an Urzatron deck and have to remove an Emrakul.

Matches 8-10 were against a red-blue-green deck. I lost one match to Scapeshift and Valakut, but I won another and my opponent conceded during the third after drawing no spells.

I am also removing Gruesome Encore. I am adding 1 more Mind Sculpt and until I get another Sword of Body and Mind, I am adding a Lightning Greaves to my main deck.

0
Posted 04 June 2013 at 04:58

Actually, forget the idea of Geth's Verdict, for now I am going to go with Sudden Spoiling. If I use Geth's Verdict, one of Geist's angels will still get through, and it won't work at all if my opponent has more than one creature. Sudden Spoiling will also work as a fog when I need it, and it will help me stop decks like elf tribal.

0
Posted 04 June 2013 at 05:31

Also, I got rid of Sword of Body and Mind and I moved Lightning Greaves back to the sideboard. Instead, I moved two Sudden Spoiling to the main deck. I never was able to find a right time to play Sword of Body and Mind, I kept having to decide between that and mill. I might get a Kozilek to protect me from mill. I am also considering adding Sadistic Sacrament to the sideboard.

I have had 4 more matches with this deck. It crushed merfolk tribal easily. It lost horribly to Junk. It was able to beat affinity when it sideboarded in Damping Matrix. It won one game against Jund where it milled them out, but lost the other two. I also found that it is safe for this deck to have only 20 lands. I am adding Infest as it should allow this deck to win the first game against affinity, beat Lingering Souls in Junk, kill most of Jund, and devastate Geist of Saint Traft decks. I am also replacing River of Tears with Creeping Tar Pit because I never was able to have the right color of mana with the River and I kept having extra mana that I had nothing to do with.

0

When did you add oboro? That's a sweet card, I haven't counted the games where I wished I had a land to feed my crabs with. Sick tech!

I have had good games against affinity with darkblast, since most moderndesigns has the low toughness of 1. Perhaps try out 2 darkblast and 2 infest to see which is the better? Darkblast also works wonders against infect which sees some play from time to time.

River of tears is best when you have fetchlands in the deck too. I have never had trouble with it, but it takes carefull planning and in some cases slow you a turn. It's quite fun with fetch actually. I usually use some instant mill and use the blue mana at opponents end, and the black mana during my own turns.

And finally, your older versions of this deck are still locked with access denied. I guess there is a bug in the system somewhere.

0

I'll try Darkblast. Infest was taking into account the pump from Master of Etherium, can remove swarms of tokens, can kill most tribal lords, kills most of Jund's creatures, and removes Geist of Saint Traft. I don't have fetchlands, since they are expensive and the blue/black one is not modern legal. I added Oboro a while ago, after I had the misfortune to open up a Saviors of Kamigawa booster pack and got that as my rare.

I have made some changes to this deck. First, I've replaced Creeping Tar Pit with Underground River. I really needed the mana quickly and most of the time after the first couple of turns I tapped it for colorless mana anyways. Second, I've moved Infest to the sideboard, it killed my Hedron Crabs too often. To make room for it, I removed Inquisition of Kozilek from my sideboard, it is a little on the expensive side. To replace Infest in the main deck, I'm trying out Bloodchief Ascension. With Dark Confidants, Vault Skirges, Shocklands, Fetchlands, and Thoughtseizes, my opponents often use up their life total quickly. Bloodchief Ascension will either remove many of their options or turn every mill spell into a life drain.

I wrote on the pyrohemiathread, but the text won't stay there, or it's visible for you only?
So I'll write suggestions in here.

What's your meta like?
I'm thinking of echoing truth instead of pungyfy, since echoing will be effective against splintertwin as well. also if theres room for it, you could couple it with the R-cost red sorcery that lets both players draw 2 cards and discard them at random, which may fit in well with your extractions. Plaxmanta doesn't fit your colors, but I have seen some play it instead of the glass-thingy.

Erhm. Need more meta-knowledge!

I'd attempt to put in Crumbling Necropolis, that way you can cast Breaking and Entering, both halves.

Tried, messes too much with the tempo. by the time that I am able to cast Entering, I've usually used Surgical Extraction to exile their best card, meaning that I can't use it.

So, I had 4 more matches and did horribly. My first was against Merfolk, I'm not sure what went wrong there, but I think I need more removal. My second was against this weird w/u deck that used Isochron Scepter, but also used Drogskol Captainwith Call to Kindred to get Drogskol Reavers into play. I did horribly in the first game, I muliganed down to 5 and played one land. My opponent had a hand full of counterspells, so the game went on for around 10 turns before I conceded just to make things move faster. I won the second, but the third he was able to get two Drogskol Reavers out and he won. The third time I faced against a WUR midrange deck without Geist of Saint Traft. I lost the first game to Lightning Helix on an Isochron Scepter and lost the second to Rest in Peace. The fourth game was against a Grixis control/discard deck that used Grim Lavamancer and Unearthed Sedraxis Specters to win. I am going to cut Despise from this deck because I never really used it and kept boarding it out. I will either add in Inquisition of Kozilek, Slaughter Pact, Creeping Tar Pit, or a combination of two or three of the above.

Perhaps throw 1 surgical extraction into sideboard and remove 1 card from sideboard.
Mindsculpt potentially mills less so I'd remove that if you don't want to touch the extraction.

Thanks, already did. I want all four Surgical Extractions. Taking away part of Tron, Geist of Sain Traft, Valakut, or Melira is great, and it is perfect disruption for Melira Pod.

I've completely revamped the deck. I had lost sight of the goal being to hit for large amounts of damage and added too much mill. I added Visions of Beyond to refill my hand, Delver of Secrets for more damage, and more lands to help with Hedron Crab. I also changed the removal to Nameless Inversion and Dismember. Ancestral Visions will be replaced by Phyrexian Arena when I get some. I am going to try to eventually add Sword of Light and Shadow, Creeping Tar Pit, Spellskite, Thoughtseize, O-Naginata, Glimpse the Unthinkable, Tombstalker, Mesmeric Orb, and Snapcaster Mage.
