Deck Description

A mono black discard deck. This deck is still a work in progress, and the sideboard definitely needs a bit of work.

Edit - In its current build, it seems to play pretty well. My only issue is that after about turn 5 or 6 I am down to one card (which is normal) but I tend to be pulling land about 60% of the time. Not sure why as I thought the land ratio was pretty good.

Sideboard - This sideboard is designed for two purposes. One, it can get rid of several creatures, spells, etc... But two, it can target specific spells that can hurt this deck, such as Solitary Confinement, but killing the cards that can feed it, such as Squee. (Read comments)

Deck discussion for Megrim's Caress

The problem with playing draw/discard is that you effectively play against yourself. What's the point of discarding if you're giving them more cards with Howling Mine, why let them draw if you're just going to take them anyway, and the most important question, what happens when you are letting them draw and can't take anything from them?

You could probably make two effective decks splitting the idea and then tweaking them each. For discard, you have the basics, but bump the Liliana's Caress count to 4, consider Thoughtseize, and Hypnotic Specter.

For draw, add in Teferi's Puzzle Box, splash blue for Wheel and Deal other draw mechanics that you can twist into a negative for your opponent, Jace Beleren for an alternate Howling Mine, while increasing the mine count to 4. Lots of options with both.

You are effectively counteracting yourself playing both ideas, and you're right, with the card count, you can never ensure that what you get will be what you need at any given time.

I appreciate any comments or criticism you can offer on any of the decks that I have posted here (just click on my name to see my deck list). Thanks in advance.

I had thought of splitting them from the beginning... My plan is to control them as the draw, but if I don't have the right cards, you are right.. I just fed them to kill me... I liked the draw ben for myself, but I guess it bens everyone if I can't hurt them enough... I like a blue/black draw killer... that could work nice... I will tweak this to a discard only and go from there... Thanks for the advice!

Ok, I made this pure discard... I still think it can stand to be tweaked... I am thinking there are better discard burn cards... though this doesn't seem bad. I have the hypno specters, there were in at one point. I ditched them for the Augur of Skulls... Less cards but sure fire, as I may not always hit with the hypnos. I am considering adding cursed racks in to assist, but maybe only 2 though they may not get much use, as I hopefully will have them in rack range till they die.

What do you think of Gruul Draz Specter instead cause the hand should be near empty if not empty.

This looks a lot better in terms of discard. To go further, you could consider phasing out the Cabal Coffers, however. Don't get me wrong, it's a GREAT card, but with everything in the deck costing 3 CC or less, you're rarely really needing to tap into it (not to mention, it's absolutely worthless in an opening hand).

With that said, you could consider phasing Liliana Vess out, too. I know, I know, she's awesome, but again, with a CC of 5 are you really going to need her when you get her. Early, she's awesome, but that means Dark Riting into her turn 2 or 3 (or my favorite, double Dark Riting her turn 1)).

With that said:

-4 Cabal Coffers
-2 Liliana Vess
-2 Piranha Marsh

+2 Bojuka Bog
+4 Diabolic Edict (in the event you need protection)
+1 The Rack
+1 Swamp

See if that works for speed, that would make everything a 3 CC or less and allow you to fire things off right away.

Actually, the Edicts would be much better in the sideboard instead of the main board....

Sorry bout that.

I am debating removing the Sadistic Sacraments for Guul Draz Specter... Yes he costs 4, but his ability is nice seeing as I should have their hands at zero a lot, at least that is the hope. The SS is not a true discard, though in a way helps with protection, especially if kicked... but the chances of me kicking... slim.. thoughts? Anyone?

As you were commenting about that, I split them, but yeah I think I will go all SB

As of now, I feel this deck is playing very well at it is... Saying that, I have not yet played against any very aggressive decks. For casual play, I can win about 80% of the time with anywhere from 1-18 life. My average winning life total is about 11.

So it's safe to say that it's playing better than it was before? If so, start working on the draw deck and let's get that tweaked as well.

As always, I appreciate any comments or criticism you can offer on any of the decks that I have posted here (just click on my name to see my deck list). Thanks in advance.

Yeah it is... I really thank you for your help... I have started mapping out the deck already... There are not many cards... You can take a look at it under my profile. It is called Dreams of Death.

Ok, after some major play testing, I found that even though the mana count is right, I tend to get tons of land, so the Dark Rits were coming up dead. I pulled 2 of those and put in 2 demon's horns. I am thinking of cutting 2 more land and getting something else in, or cutting the other 2 Dark Rits, but I do use them if I can get a caress or megrim our by turn 3 with a bunch of 1cc discards. The horns have already helped a lot. My avg win life is now around 16, with many over 20.

After talking with a friend who runs a very interesting deck, I am now presented with a unique sideboard quest. I need to find a way to either A. Splash white/dischants or B. Find a way to dischant without green or white.
Solitary Confinement - This is one of the cards that could easily bane this deck build. He uses this along with Squee, Goblin Nabob (see the genius here?)... I must either dischant or find a way to get rid of Squee. I could use something like Sadistic Sacrament to exile Squee, but he can still discard other cards. I

Tormod's Crypt after removing Squee will make him disappear, but I imagine that he's playing more than one. With that in mind, all that's coming to me are cards like Extract and Jester's Cap to just flat out remove them from his deck (this would mean splashing blue, though Jester's Cap is an artifact).

Otherwise, Nevinyrral's Disk or Oblivion Stone can be used to clear the board, but that means for you, too. Tormod's Crypt and Rat's Feast can keep his GY empty so that he can't use Squee.

Otherwise, splash green via Tainted Wood and Verdant Catacombs to use Naturalize.

I will have to look at a few of those... Yeah he runs three, but never plays Squee so it's never on the board, only in hand, GY or Deck... so I went after the exile cards, as I can use those on anyone as well.
