Deck Description

cycle throw your deck. keep your hand size up with "aquitect's will", "silvergill adept's" and "distant melodies". then draw a new hand with the Whirlpool merfolk. With a "stonybrook banneret" and a "merrow reejerey" you can play most of the creatures in your deck for free. Cycle your deck until you get enough lord's an reejerey's on the field then attack with big islandwalker's.

Deck discussion for merfolk blender

This deck runs cards that let you draw and have cheap mana effects. It plays on a good premise that you can simply beat your opponent down using Lord of Atlantis, however, it lacks cards that can counter. Merfolk decks play on low mana so cards like stonybrook are not really needed. You should be playing about 22 lands and try running mutavault as it helps this build big time and will be cheaper this next block rotation.
I believe that you should not run cards like sea scryer, whirlpool warrior, whirlpool rider, and stonybrook. Instead try out curse-snatcher for countering, wake thrasher for beat down, and Sygg River cut throat for a more consistent play style.
Next distant melody is a high costing "brick" . Take it out and run cards like counterspell, daze, force of will, or cryptic command. Aquitect's will does actually help this build so I will advise you to stick with them.

I agree that the lack of counter spells is a weakness of the deck but the 2 whirlpool merfolk are what makes the deck really work. I use the reejereys to untap my own lands. If I don't see one in my opening hand I use the warriors to draw a new hand. Once a reejerey and a banneret is in play most all of my other cards play for free. I use the aqutect's will and the adept's for draw and arctic merforks to bounce the adept to draw or the whirlpool creatures to get a new hand. Once I get 2 reejerey's in play I actually gain mana for each merfolk I play.

by turn 4-5 I can have every merfolk in my deck on the battlefield. I have found that counter spells slow the deck down.

i like it a lot but i would probably take out the 4 sea scryer's for some counter cards. you really don't need to extra mana since you have stonybrook. also i'm not too sure how much you would need distant melody. you just can use the whirpools to cycle the extra land you have in your hand to get the cards that you need. as far as counter spells. use force of will and force spike. counters that you dont need mana for so that you can play all the merfolk you want to and still be able to counter if you need too. this shouldn't slow down the deck as much since you can still use all the mana you need. just my 2 cents =)
