Deck Description

Merfolk tribal deck/counter deck I have. The merfolk lords support the tribal theme, while Thada Adel, the Merfolk Spys and the Scroll Thiefs make use of Merfolk Sovereign's ability. The Lullmage Mentor and the counters compliment eachother, while the diminish is there to lessen an unblocked attack or shrink down big attackers to a killable size.

Merfolk Spy isnt useful. Use 4 Scroll Thief instead.Imprtant for counter/control is card draw

I have the Merfolk Spys in there for a one drop that I could cast on my first turn, or on a turn where I would have 1 mana extra along with the mana I need for my counter spells. Also, his ability allows me to see a card from my opponents hand so I know if I might want to save my mana. I used to have 4 Scroll Thiefs and 2 Merfolk Spys, but in my opinion they were too expensive and often got bolted, or I used them to chump block. I was also thinking of putting in Enclave Cryptologist, any thoughts on that?

Not a good idea. I think Cryptologist is a crapcard because it is too expansive to get its ability well working.
Merfolk Spy dont give you such a view dures for example would do. Keep in Mind that every Counter you play would left an empty place in your hand and a full hand is important for your deck type.

That makes sense, although my Scroll Thieves often find themselves lightening bolted more often than with my merfolk spies . Should I bother putting in mind spring for more draws? I wanted to limit the deck to control, but I could add it.

In my ex T2 deck http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=98697 i played only two ones because they make you mana short. You should take See Beyond instead
