I wanted to put together a fairly competitive monoblack deck without spending money on chase rares like Liliana of the Veil or Griselbrand. Game 1, we have lots of mainboard removal for aggro and midrange decks. If the match is against a more control oriented deck, we board in strong creatures, as well as control hate to make sure we resolve the big finishers like Lord of the Void and Desecration Demon.Any suggestions to make the deck more consistent and/or more competitive while still remaining a budget deck are appreciated!
Stabilize with smaller creatures to stall like Vampire Nighthawk and Gloom Surgeon, as well as creature removal. Then use Crypt Ghast to ramp into Lord of the Void and Staff of Nin, which just really puts us ahead. Because we're mono colored, mana screw is far less likely than in 2 or 3 color decks. Our mainboard is aimed mostly toward aggro and Jund, while the sideboard is targeted towards control match-ups. Use Disciple of Bolas on bigger creatures like desecration demon, which gives us the card advantage and life gain that we're missing from a Griselbrand.

Mono black isn't a great control color by itself, and in my opinion, this is more of a Midrange. Also, Staff of Nin isn't that great of a card for this deck. Instead of gaining an advantage yourself by drawing more, black is meant to put your opponent at a disadvantage, so throw in a few Mind Rots instead.
