Indestructible Devotion

by Shinza on 19 October 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (14 cards)

Sorceries (1)

Artifacts (4)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

This deck is devotion-based.

The idea is to use very few colorless mana in my permanent costs while using lots of black.
Then the merchant delivers.

Meanwhile Phylactery Lich has his phylactery token on an indestructible artifact. (4x Darksteel Ingot, 4x Darksteel Citadel)
And the Darksteel Ingots are helping to pay for cards stolen by Nightveil Spectre.
And then the artifacts are 5/5 indestructible creatures with Ensoul Artifact.

9/26/15
Edit: after some trials, I realized I need to improve early game. The ingots were not worth their slots so I put in ornithopter to get ensouled. I then realized I could improve it further with vault skirg. The obliterator and pain fetches had to go for budgetary reasons. Still looking for best one drops to use.

How to Play

Get your devotion on!

Plenty of big creatures to get rolling!

Use Mask of Riddles on an indestructible lich or one of the darksteels or best yet, on nightveil spectre!

Have fun!

Excelsior!

Deck discussion for Indestructible Devotion

I'd love to hear what you think of the deck!

Why not throw in a Day of Judgment, Supreme Verdict, or Wrath of God?

That's a really good thought! All my indestructibles would survive!
The problem is the mana base would be tough.
What was the black version of Wrath of God? Now that would be a possibility.
Not at all budget though.

I was looking for some good synergy with these cards. What do you think?

Btw, thanks for your suggestion! I'm clicking the up arrow on the right side of your comment to increase your reputation +1

Thank you! A sneaky way of doing it would be to use Nevinyrral's Disk. It only uses colorless mana b/c it is an artifact. There are other ways of doing it, but I think that might work best (it would also wipe out Detention Sphere and Oblivion Ring). And maybe you want to try running a Darksteel Forge too.

recoil would maybe be something or Memory Lapse or Griptide/Repel/Time Ebb/Vanishment or Temporal Eddy bounce creatures on top of its owners library so you can strike with Nightveil Specter and get the card you bounced.

Oh, i get the theme, I like inquisitor's flail in hear with the indestructible. Maybe glen elandra archmage would be good, but it seems a little weak. i really like the theme and how it looks, thank you for sending me over hear! :)

Thanks Julian. Rep+1 to you.
Should I be concerned with having spot removal?

Which is better....Mask of Riddles (2 CMC adds 1 devotion, fear & 1 card draw)
or
Infiltration Lens (1 CMC, doesn't help devotion, no fear, draw 2 cards whenever creature gets blocked)

I would keep the masks in they seem better, as devotion is an important part to this strategy. :)

Black night, I think. And geralf's messenger and phyrexian obliterator. :)

Instead of darkslick, I'd put in Watery Grave, then take out 4 swamps for Polluted Delta. Then you have a choice to search for a basic when you need it, or just go found that shock land that helps your mana base. Past that cool Idea.

Never mind. I was going to recommend throwing in Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. But it probably wouldn't help much.

Urborg as a 1 of is always nice. Blue manna makes the dark steel citadels tap for black.

Very nice. Might put up a challenge for my vampire colony but I believe my vampires would win in the end. No way to remove artifacts. I'll look for cards that will help this deck. Any restrictions you have?

Dennis, I'd love to take on a vampire deck. Haven't faced one yet and my modern deck loves new challengers.

Checked your deck AjaniBeastMode. My decks are too creature heavy to take that deck. They wouldn't live to get annoying. I need to get a couple creatures out to deal any damage. I would appreciate any help in changing my deck to work better.

My decks are best against green or red that make enormous creatures or in FFA.

Against control, the best bet is timing the spells. Our goal is to make you run out of gas. Then destroy your car while it can't move. Play the things that you get value out of it dying, and make it worth it. Vampires have some of the best Undying and When this creature or another creature dies effects. Look into those. Thanks for the look at the deck. I'm still fine tuning but planning on going to a grand prix soon to qualify for a pro tour.

Perhaps Ghastlord of the Fugue? It is a 4/4 unblockable that costs UB UB UB UB UB. When it deals combat damage to a player, you look at their hand, and exile a card of your choice.
Also, you get a +1 from me, sir. Kudos.

I beleive that any of the Divinity of pride cycle of cards would be nice.
Ghastlord of Fuge
Deity of scars
Demigod of Revenge
Dominus of Fealty

Plus, what about nykthos? It would definitely be helpfull.

1
Posted 31 October 2014 at 14:23

thank you for the inout!
I'm trying to keep mana cost low. the merchant is eating up the 5 cmc slots.
Nykthos is an interesting idea... hmm,,,

I had divinity of Pride and Ghastlord each selected at various incarnations, but both have been relegated to the sideboard as I try to get my early game and spot creature/permanent removal off the ground.

And at the same time, I'm trying to keep this budget conscious since I'd like to actually play it IRL.

At any rate, keep the ideas coming! Rep +1 to you (an up vote delivered on the right side of your post).

What about a rite of replication? Rather costly for cmc, but if you save it till late game, then the kicker with the merchant would be hilarious.

I've found that the whip of erebos is a pretty good card to run with gray merchants.

Seems fun but what I meant was putting 5 copies of a merchant onto the battlefield. All their abilities activate. Also did you check my second deck design? All my decks are made of cards I own.

It would be fun if you have the mana. But Whip buffs devotion as well. Plus gets one back from grave so scares opponent to block it. Plus Lifelink

Thanks for the input!
The rite would be something if i pulled it off!
It doesn't really fit the black symbol profile
I do like the Whip of Erebos though.

Two black mana definitely fits the devotion goal.
What can I sunstitute out?

What do you guys think about me putting in Utter End (or 3)?

Btw.... +1 rep for both of you. Thoughts are valuable. keep em comin!

1

The rite only needs one more blue than the ensoul artifact. Utter end is a good card against decks with returns, but you would need to swap out some lands. Maybe it would be good in the sideboard. Useful against that one jerk with elixer of immortality cards.

Hi. Nice idea, i like it.
I think Black knight is sideboard creature.
Add 1 more merchant and add 2 Abhorent overlords - epic combo with grave pact. And where is indestructible Erebos, God of the dead? :-)
Change darkslick shores with scry Temple of deceit (no 1 drop in your deck).
Have a nice day.

Yeah, but this deck isnt classic modern deck. Overlord is epic finisher for every devotion deck + bonus grave pact. I won a lot of games with him.

Well +1 to you shinza, its functional and original. urborg, tomb of yawgmoth would fit well. Still don't like the overlord, games should be over by turn 7... But give it a shot you never know until you play test it

As for scry land as 1 drop option.... brilliant!

have you read my suggestion. here it is. recoil would maybe be something or Memory Lapse or Griptide/Repel/Time Ebb/Vanishment or Temporal Eddy bounce creatures on top of its owners library so you can strike with Nightveil Specter and get the card you bounced.

0

My last tips... :)
Necroskitter - 1/4 wither, survives lightning bolt, 2/3 devotion
Lifebane Zombie - sideboard
Royal Assassin - not bad in deck without spells like doom blade

Phyrexian Arena
Whip of Erebos - very nice enchantment, lifelink and unearth for all of your creatures.

Hi, recoil and Memory Lapses are legacy cards. Remand is better!
Any sorcery or instant card is bad...
This is deck based on devotion, therefore player need permanents, not spells.

Am considering the following...
Out: 2x vampire nighthawk, plagued rasalka, shadow alley denizen
In: 2x necroskitter, 2x fume spitter
Reasoning is that with skin render, fume spitter, and necroskitter I could steal their creatures. Kinda fits the night veil specter stealing stuff theme.

Question: is fume spitter better than oonas gate warden in this deck?
