Black is the coolest color. You can tell me I'm wrong, but if you do, I must inform you that it is in fact you that is wrong. There's been this rumor going around that in the current standard format, black is the "weakest" color. But fellow Black-lovers (good God, this is starting to sound incredibly offensive), fear not. There is a deck in Standard that still lets our favorite color shine. Ironically, the namesake of said deck is Green, but that doesn't matter: Zombie Pod, here we come.
This is a deck that I play with. I don't own Cavern of Souls, but if you could get 2 or 3 they would be better than Swamps. As far as what makes this deck a bit different from other Zombie Pod decks out there, this is what I would say:
1. 6 CMC Massacre Wurm; a lot of decks will top off their curve with Zealous Conscripts. But frankly you don't always immediately win with Conscripts and after that first turn you play them they become incredibly weak. Same thing with Morkrut Banshee: very useful to be able to cast at any given time, but it isn't nearly as good the turn after it comes into play. So why not have one creature to top out the curve that will almost certainly win you the game? I love Massacre Wurm, I think it's not used nearly enough, so I thought I'd throw one in as a true finisher when Zealous Conscripts just isn't enough.
2. Morkrut Banshee; this card is not used that much in any constructed format, and that's probably because it isn't very good. That being said, being able to pull one out at any time is a pretty nifty feature that this deck can pull off. I like to have one, but agaisnt decks with bigger creatures/planeswalkers, just take a second copy of Conscripts from your sideboard.
3. Lightning Mauler; once again, this creature doesn't get seen that much in constructed formats. That being said, the main reason why I have it here is this: I do not like Gloom Surgeon. He's a card that most Zombie Pod decks run as a solid 2 drop, but frankly I would rather have a Lightning Mauler. Plus, with this decks ability to search through cards, having a single copy can be easy to find. Giving your Skinrender or your Morkrut Banshee haste can give you two opportunities to attack with them before you sacrifice them. He adds a nice amount of utility and I there are not a whole lot of great 2 drops.
4. Diregraf Captain; this is a card I would run 2 of in the main deck if I had Cavern of Souls. He's great Zombie card, and making your opponent lose life every time you sacrifice Gravecrawler or Geralf's Messenger to the Pod is a great thing to have. Right now I only have one sideboarded and I've been experimenting with him to see whether or not I actually like him. Sadly, without Cavern of Souls, he sometimes winds up becoming a dead card in your hand. You can still get him out with the Pod, but if you draw him it really sucks.
So yeah, there's my deck. It's incredibly fun to play and surprisingly reliable. It's still not as good as the Miracles, Delvers, and Titans that currently dominate Standard, but it's good enough to beat them when you get a good draw. If you get a chance, I highly recommend this deck because it's awesome and if you like the color Black then you are awesome too.
Thanks for taking a look at my deck, criticism and stuff like that is always welcome so bring it on.
