This deck was created under the local-group stipulation that we play a variant of EDH that utilizes only Modern (8th edition forward) and supplemental original printings from sets after 8th edition; so, for example, Dragonlair Spider is legal whereas Sol Ring is not. We find this restriction creates more balanced games since it keeps us from abusing the historically good search and mana producing cards like Demonic Tutor, Survival of the Fittest, Mana Crypt, and the aforementioned Sol Ring. My build here seeks to create a board state with numerous token creatures to either overrun my opponents with such cards as Craterhoof Behemoth, or to simply use them for a massive, in my favor, board reset in the way of either Warp World or the Great Aurora. For the token-haters, I also have a handful of big guys who can take down a player in a single hit via the commander's abilities. The deck has a higher mana curve, but also ways to sneak those fatties onto the battlefield, so I have no worries.
Early on there are many value creatures to ramp out lands with, and I play them above all else. Commander is generally a slower format and, given the chance to play an early Malignus or Solemn Simulacrum I'd almost always take the Solemn. Although such beef as Malignus can and often does topple an opponent all by itself with some help from the General, I prefer to build up an empire of land and token creatures so that the inevitable Warp World or The Great Aurora is heavily sided in my favor. In addition to being the game changers, these massive sorceries are, quite frankly, effective board wipes for pesky permanents of all kinds, taking the weight off of the still powerful shoulders of such cards as Bane of Progress (who should be used only in greatest peril). Whether its an assault via a token army super-sized by such cards as Dragon Throne of Tarkir, Craterhoof Behemoth, etc. or a lone mountainous Mossbridge Troll, this deck gets the job done!
