Deck Description

A concept that I had come up with a while ago, but was never able to figure out completely. But, here we are: A mono-red deck that can mill!

PLEASE NOTE:
You are more likely to kill the player by stripping their life total then you actually milling them out, but hey, I made a red mill deck

How to Play

Get out a Mindcrank ASAP, after that just play it like any other red burn deck and watch the cards fall!

Deck discussion for Mono-Red Mill!

Usually a mono-red deck prevents healing with cards like Skullcrack.
You decided to go with style and use milling.

Hilarious. Leaving a +1 like here.

Nice work s0rin, I love decks with style. You may not win all the time, but when you do, it's just that much more epic.
Volcanic Hammers for extras of that 3 for 2 concept you're rockin.

+1 for style points.

Speaking of hilarious concepts, check this thing out. I'm quite proud of it, but feedback is always a plus. /noshame

Bit of an issue here... you've tripled the difficult job of killing your opponent rather than just burning them

1
Posted 09 March 2015 at 19:13

I made a note that you will almost always burn them, but if they gain back the life, then you mill them

0
Posted 11 March 2015 at 09:58

Pretty funny but you would burn them to death before you milled them. I guess It's good for life link users (like me :D)

0
Posted 09 March 2015 at 19:14

That does seem to be the downfall...that most of the time you will burn them before they ever get milled out. But it is neat...sorta like 2 Win conditions in one deck. And 2 Win Cons is never a bad thing.

0
Posted 09 March 2015 at 20:24

It isn't really a second win con, because burn can't really manage 50ish points of burn in the average game

0
Posted 09 March 2015 at 20:27

would it be better to add bigger creatures? i thought of it 2 but don't have many that come 2 mind...

0
Posted 09 March 2015 at 21:48

Best I can think of is Thundermaw Hellkite, and that takes 10ish attacks to mill

0
Posted 09 March 2015 at 22:06

Interesting, you mean you do not think he could do enough damage to mill the opponent out of cards.

If that is true...which it may be...I know of a card that would be very nice.
Eidolon of the Great Revel.
It makes it to where you do not need to do 50ish points with only your cards.
Your opponent would essentially mill himself every time he played a spell for 3 mana or under.

And Whitelord has a good plan too. If the small direct damage can't manage 50ish points of burn...why not a big fatty like Ball Lightning?

If only Mindcrank exchanged damage for mill. If instead of Lightning Bolt doing 3 damage and milling 3 cards...if it only milled the 3 cards...that would be swell.

It would be insane...and probably easier ways to do it...but it would be neat if you somehow made the opponent gain life. Mill, gain life, mill, gain life, mill, gain life.

0
Posted 09 March 2015 at 22:12

Life gain isn't huge in any formats, but Eidolon is a beater! Ball lightning sacing itself might be an issue, I really think the Mill just screws the fluidity of Burn, it was a nice idea, but tripling the way you win and throwing 4 slots away doesn't sound like the smartest plan

0

And that is why I suggested, to the good sir, to do a red/black Mindcrank deck with Bloodchief Ascension :)

For Modern? Na bro, all about streamlining burn to deal 20 damage in as few turns as possible, Mill is tough in modern because you need to do 50 'damage' while as everyone else only has to deal 20 damage

0

Sorry...I meant as a Casual Player.
Yes, for Modern Tourneys pure burn is better than mill.
For a Modern kitchen table deck the Bloodchief deck is neat.

0

Okay, so this deck doesn't make sense since all that Mindcrank does is almost tripling the amount of damage you have to do in order to win. It would be a cool concept if Mindcrank would work for all players (because then you would have more time, too) but nooo, Wizards doesn't print symmetrical cards anymore ...

Okay, you have a red mill deck now but honestly, you could just use a Keening Stone in a red deck instead and call it a "mono red milling deck" ... it wouldn't even be slower.

However, if you want to put Mindcrank to good use, all you need to do is to couple it with Duskmantle Guildmage! Activate him with Mindcrank in play and the next card put into his graveyard or the next life he loses will kill him! However, it would mena playing black and blue ...
... but the trick also works with Bloodchief Ascension. Drawback would be that you need it to get active first, but on the plus side it costs only one mana and no blue. Would fit perfectly into an otherwise red burn deck like this!

EDIT:
Oh and if you don't want to go that route and really, really want a red mill deck ... then please do it right and add Wheel of Fortune, Wheel of Fate, Memory Jar and maybe Howling Mine ... that would keep your hand filled with burn and whittle away the opponent's library at the same time (and you'll draw into Mindcranks faster). This might actually work since once you have more than one Mindcrank, you'll mill more than one card per damage done.

1
Posted 10 March 2015 at 16:13

Pity that Memory Jar is only legal in Vintage and EDH, not Modern.

Defiantly +1 from me cool concept. How about doubling your damage with curse of bloodletting (could use more then one to double and triple damage) of furnace of rath (not sure if that would affect you as well) then if you can get some ways to ramp into those cards (mana rupture) then you can get those cards out quick to help mill/burn

lava dart will support monastery swiftspear,
I'd also use faithless looting to either find mesmeric orb or throw more flashback in the grave.

And lastly, noxious revival may let you take advantage of anything that gets in your grave, plus it can stall your opponents combo/reanimate strategy!

perhaps we could contemplate the concept of haveing more then one mindcrank out at a time. or is this not applicable?

0
Posted 11 March 2015 at 17:05

Yes, with blue and stuff like Clever Impersonator and Copy Artifact.
But if you are already using blue...there are better options than Mindcrank.

0
Posted 11 March 2015 at 19:39

I what talking about having two or three mindcrancks out all at once there effects would all trigger due to a spell so the milling would increase, that seems the only thing people are considering right now.

0
Posted 21 March 2015 at 00:16

How is this a mill deck?
Just because of the mindcrank? That doesn't make it a mill deck.
In singleplayer it is just 20+ damage via spells and a side effect of 20+ milled cards, so he/she is long dead before the deck is ever gone.
You can even do that without any creatures, but if you want a creature in there it's the guttersnipe to accelerate the damage.
Now that will hurt in multiplay as well...A few sizzles in there and presto.
But in the end it's still just a burn deck..

1
Posted 11 March 2015 at 17:42

Yup, that is about right, mind crank might help your opponent as well xD

0
Posted 11 March 2015 at 17:59

It suffers from the same problem in multiplayer. Sizzles or lighting bolts, people will still die from the damage way before they would get milled.

0
Posted 11 March 2015 at 18:10

And modern has a tonne of ways to use the graveyard, you basically draw storm 3 cards each time you bolt them

0
Posted 11 March 2015 at 19:31

I still say go the long route and make it white and Mindcrank.
Stuff like silly Wall of Shards. Make them keep gaining life as their cards dwindle.
And you hide behind protection. Very slow.
Issue would be how to pull off the damage though.

0

1

A mono-white mill deck would be better off using Mesmeric Orb or Keening Stone rather than Mindcrank. Mindcrank ist probably the worst of all options for white.

1

Mono-white mill has to be about as great as a Mono-Green burn deck.

1
Posted 11 March 2015 at 20:07

There you go good sirs.
Does it work?

http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/mono-white-infinite-mill/

Step 1. Myr Moonvessel
Step 2. Grinding Station
Step 3. Enduring Renewal

Keep sacking the Myr moonvessel to Grinding station.
Each time opponent mills 3 cards.
Enduring Renewal brings back Myr moonvessel to your hand.
You replay Myr Moonvessel with the one mana you got when he was originally sacked.
When Myr Moonvessel hits the table Grinding Station untaps.
Repeat the process!!!

Works, right?

1
Posted 11 March 2015 at 20:27

Yep, works. Now lets please hurry to make a mono-green one, too, to complete the cycle so we can move on and build regular decks again :P

1
Posted 12 March 2015 at 08:46

I would like to talk with you about this deck concept. There is a realistic way to mill someone with red, and i've built the deck, if you'd like to hear about it.

0
Posted 12 March 2015 at 17:17

Altar of the Brood (1 coloress mana artifact) each time you put a perm down ( a land or creature ect) ea oppenent mils a card.

Burning Inquiry (1 red mana) each player discaRDS 3 cards and draws 3 cards (almost like mil)

mindmoil and winds of change are two cards to cycle through your deck to get the things you want faster.

Reforge the Soul (Could be 1 colorless 1 red for miracle) or 5 mana total. Sorcery. Each player discards their hand and draws 7 cards.

(x4 mincranks all on the field at once would take at least 12-16 damage to mil them) Likely hood of you getting all 4 = 2% There is probably a better way to mill or add ways to do this.

MY MONO RED! ^)^ comment please! http://www.mtgvault.com/mmmjkx2/decks/burn-and-turn/
