Deck Description

This is a spin off of Birthing Pod deck, because... ya know, its banned. So, you can search your deck in different ways now. The Congregation at Dawn is an easy way to search for the 3 cards you need to combo. Melira, Seer, and either Finks or the Redcap. Due to Melira's ability of not allowing -1/-1 counters on, your finks and redcap die and will always come back. Use the Seer as a sack outlet while either gaining infinite life or dealing infinite damage.

Deck discussion for Pod Reborn

Honest try, but it seems too reliant on the "combo". nowhere near anything POD did or was.
For who knew POD, it was an engine that rewarded you for playing lots of critters and turned 1 ofs into 5 each.
The reason it was so great, is that it was basically "free", as playing value creatures and disrupting opponents was something you want to do anyway.

Yes, but you can pull the combo in one turn using the collected company. its not hard to get it with the congregation.

That's true. So only play one of the combo creatures and make the rest value based, like pod did. The recipe for success in modern combo decks is not relying on the combo. See: Pod, Tarmotwin

If you take out some Melira's and some Redcaps you can add stuff like Qasali Pridemage, Scavenging Ooze and Voice of Resurgence to have some extra tutorable value creatures in your deck. Ideally you would only need to congregate/company once for the combo to win.

This is honestly neat.

28 lands seems high though. Maybe 26 and 2 thoughtseize?

The new Anafenza also works as a Melira and combos with Finks

I think 28 lands is too much. I'd run 22 land in this build, with 4 Kitchen Finks, 2-3 Noble hierarch and 2-3 Anafenza (DTK)

I do like the anafanza. She will be there

My original decklist did have 4 Nobel hierarcs in it, but because they're $60 a pop I took them out. Not really needed with fetches and birds.

I don't dislike the idea; I'll build this from the ground up with attention to detail.

Here's my list that more resembles what birthing pod was good at. You, like Splinter Twin, aren't trying to force the combo, you're trying to be versatile and play creatures that make a difference.

I am with you. That is about how I would run my modern company deck. A few different cards but along those lines. Having more 1 and 2 ofs gives us more freedom to add in answers. I think I would still run Congregation at Dawn but Chord of Calling seems nice too.

Changed it to Gravepurge instead of Congregation at Dawn.

I would maybe have another sac outlet.

Falkenrath Aristocrat: not the best choice. You would have to add in red mana source and has 4 CMC so company can't hit it.

Cartel Aristocrat: This is more up our alley. You are running white and black mana sources. Company can hit. It is able to protect it's self for the most part. You can even swing with it if need to.

Also what about adding in Gravepurge instead of Congregation at Dawn? It only cost us a black and 2 at instant speed (instead of a solid 2 green and 1 white), puts cards on top of our library and draws us a card afterword. I think this might be better because we can then sac and lose our creatures early game and not feel so bad.

Question, would this even work? since they come into play with the counter, from the grave?

1

Are you asking if Melira and persist work?

Yes it would because if Melira is already out and when your persist creatures come back they can't have the -1/-1 placed on them because of Melira's effect.

In my view here is the problem. Pod allows you to run 1 ofs for a tutor chain into answers you need, as well as works as your sac outlet to keep the engine running. The decks you are trying to make won't work because lets be honest collected isn't pod. You are trying for a combo kill like twin and will have the same issue except you don't have to control to back it up. So seer goes your done. Yeah you might catch someone here or there off guard but pod lasted through boards/builds because it had answers as well as threats.

I personally think collected is more for a agro zoo build but even that will be hard to tweak to be competitive.

As a member of Team Pod I massively approve - I would cut one or two abrupt decays and/or congregation at dawn to add in a couple of chord of calling and definitely Siege Rhino. When you're running WBG it's too good to leave out !

Thank you all for your assistance on this deck. Currently I am still trying to take out the kinks in the deck, but its pretty difficult. I do like Chord of Calling, however, it only brings out one creature. When you use the Congregate and the Company combo, you're able to bring out two, including an Anafanza trigger if needed. I like the Siege Rhino idea because it does not currently have a back-up plan. And Rhino is the way to go. But overall, all of your comments have been considered, and I will continue to work on the deck. Hope it all works out. :)

This isn't even close to birthing pod, it's more of a Melira combo deck. Pod was the dexk, turn 2 on the play pod was often "gg" especially when you could just sac the creature in response to removal, and also the pod ability got around counters. This deck is very easily stopped by both of those things. Pod is dead let it rest in peace.

Could not agree more! The versatility that Pod gave you is gone with Pod and trying to resurrect it with inferior card/s makes it, well, inferior...
RIP Pod and if you choose to run a resurrection build of it then any Junk player will smile and take the easy win.

Collected company? Congregation at Dawn? Did you even LOOK at the deck?!

2

I've been playing with my version of this deck for a long time now. As soon as Anafenza was spoiled, I put my version of this deck together. I would DEFINITELY run at the very least 2 Chord of Calling. Congregation at Dawn seems like it should be an all star in this deck but it is not. You need 4 mana before you congregate into Collected Company for it to work since you are putting 3 creatures on the top there is no chance to draw into land or anything else for that matter. 24 lands is far too many. I would say 20. You are a straight up combo deck and flooding really hurts you. Birds of Paradise helps fix. Speaking of mana, I would also run horizon canopy and razorverge thicket. Options to draw in a combo deck are huge, especially one not running blue. I would switch Inquisitions for Thoughtseizes since the life from Finks offsets it and it can hit everything. Protection spells are also something you should be running.

You can run it however you like, but after much play testing against all types of decks: Kiki, BW Tokens, Little Kid Abzan, and homebrews alike, I can assure on these aspects.

If you were curious on my whole list, including sideboard, here it is.

I've seen some decks like this floating around with newAnafenza coming out. I'd suggest some means of tutoring and/or card draw. Some decks use Faithless Looting, but that requires adding another colour so it's up to you.

I think that 8 shock lands is a bit much that is 1/4 of your lands and 16 life not to mention the 4 verdant catacombs. I think maybe you should consider cutting down on two maybe the temple gardens and also add couple windswept heaths. I think another nice addition would be Knight of the Reliquary. But also instead of so many basics what about a couple Isolated Chapels/ Sunpetal Groves/ Woodland Cemetery just to make your mana base a little more reliable. A nice sideboard piece for graveyard hate might be Anafenza the foremost. Also I think thoughtseize in the sideboard against control to help against sweepers since that is your main concern.

1

I disagree with you a bit.
I'd say run Windswept for sure, cut back on a few basics for more fetches and actually more shocks (maybe just two Godless Shrines). On of the advantages to running shocks and fetches is that any fetch can get you any shock, so running check lands is kind of unnecessary. You also don't want to get too greedy with your mana base since there's no actual red in the deck and Blood Moon is always something to look out for.

I do agree with added Thoughtsieze into the side though.

Blood Moon is a problem that is for sure against tri colored decks. I play Esper Control in Modern and I run 4 copies of drowned catacombs in my deck along with 6 shocks and 7 fetchlands. The problem is that lighting bolt is now the most played cad in modern and so many shocks and fetches will cause you to be killed.

You can fetch EOT and play them tapped though, and you'll untap with them.
You don't need to hurt yourself every time you play a shockland. That's kind of why they're good.

I played against pod.... A LOT. I have 3 modern decks and only one was consistently able to contend, and even that was difficult. My decks are Locket Storm, USA Control, and Green/White Hate Bearers. The USA control was the only deck ever able to manage to survive the bout. Thats because it specializes in waiting for a combo to start, and putting a wrench in the gears at the last second to make it fall apart. I can tell you right now that, with this build. any deck that has spot removal is going to get you real bad. If they see a combo piece down, and the other try's to fall, one is going to go away before the combo can fire off. I'm not sure how to get around it, but it's a major flaw you should look at.

I guess i'm just trying to say Pod gave me problems because i removed the combo's and they just responded with threats. If i removed the threats, the hit me with a combo. You need a back up plan. And there just isn't one here.

So I know that this was you trying to remake pod, but I think I have done something similar. I remade Flash Hulk but in modern. Its a fun little combo deck that is most consistent around turn 3 but can win turn 2 with the right hand. You should take a look. You seem like the type of player that would have fun with it.

this deck is actually getting increasingly popular. I don't know if you see the infinite scry triggers. you don't need more than 1 redcap. youre going to see seer every game so you could play 2. anfenza and melira could be lowered to 2 as well since youll have the ability to grab any card in your deck at almost anytime between CoCo, chord/congregation and infinite scry/gain life. giving you room for eternal witness. which brings back the combo pieces in case they remove them which they most likely will. e witt is the card you need
