Why is Gilder Bairn there? Wouldn't pure mana ramping be faster than tapping/untapping him?
I'm thinking about swapping out Elvish Guidance for Murkfiend Liege.
Nope. Mana ramp provides geometric growth of counters, while Gilder Bairn provides exponential. Say I put 5 counters on it then use Bairn. 5, then 10, then 20, then 40, then 80. In those same five turns using mana ramp, I could put 5, then 6, then 7, then 8, then 9 (assuming I play a land every turn and only spend mana on helix).
But Helix Pinnacle has shroud, so Bairn can't target it.
Gah, sorry for the double posts. Firefox has a thing for resending my posts each time I refresh.
Essentially, instead of putting one counter on Helix per mana I spend, I get far, far more counters for a steady 3 mana. The mana ramp after that can be used to use his ability again and again, with any left over going towards playing creatures or pumping Helix.
Touche...
But like I said earlier, Helix Pinnacle's shroud doesn't allow Bairn to target it with it's ability. Unless there's something I'm missing here.
Nope. You got me there. I replaced Gilder Bairn and Elvish Guidance with Murkfiend Liege and Seedborn Muse.
Hmm... Still looks pretty good, but it doesn't really have any defenses. I haven't calculated anything, but any estimates on how long it would take to get those 100 counters? It seems to significantly speed up around turn 5/6, which is when you could drop the Liege/Seedborn/Mana Reflection.
With Seedborn and either Archdruid, Priest of Titania or Rofellos, not very long at all. If I play Helix 1st turn and an elf every turn after that, by 5th turn I could have either 5 lands and 3 creatures producing anywhere from 7 to 8 mana. In a game of free for all with 4 players (which is just about how many we can get together at once), I could have 48 to 52 counters on it before turn 6.
That means I win turn 7, especially if I drop mana reflection. Of course, that's the best draw possible.
