Deck Description

this is my new and thinned version of my original 108 card mill deck. I don't play with a sideboard, so the cards listed in my "sideboard" are the cards that I took out to thin it down. any comments or suggestions welcome. I want a tournament quality deck, but only for local tournaments, nothingg major. any help is welcome please.

Deck discussion for master Mill (THINNED)

if you want tournament quality your still gonna want to thin it out more. I run a 60 card mill thats almost creatureless (creatures being hedron crab and nemesis of reason for mill only) and it does a good job. i dont know what you have to a spending limit or access to cards but here are my suggestions. id keep Mind Funeral, Tome Scour, Memory Sluice, Dream Twist, Increasing Confusion, and put Jaces Archivist back in. Put in Hedron Crab with Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse, Glimpse The Unthinkable. I use Archive Trap with Ghost Quarter as a HUGE mill if i can get the combo. and Twincast. but ONE thing - You HAVE to think about your moves to make a good and fast mill deck. and with the cards i mentioned you can pull off some impressive stuff.

ok. i'll put archivist back in, but the way i need some creatures like undead alchemist for mill and blocking against enemies while i miss. never thought about ghost quarter with archive trap. thanks. and I plan on getting some glimpse when i get my next paycheck. thanks a ton!

ghost quarter teamed with archive trap and twincast is a beast combo. with the right hand and draw you can mill the entire deck in 3 or 4 turns

nice deck man, you could easily mill my 260 deck to less then 200 cards and beat me :D

Well, the bear can go. Cheap yes, but vulnerable, and not mill oriented per say. Also I have found the belltower sphinxes to not be very effective for killing, but decent defense otherwis. Oh, and erasure is way to good to run only 1 of in my opinion.

You might be able to lose at least 1 land, maybe 2. 26 is a lot.
well, that's my 2 cents. :) hope it helps.

there are different types of mill decks, i think you should decide if you want to be creature based or spell based. if you want to stay competitive loose all the creature except hedron crab and maybe cathartic adept. By the time you play any of the creatures on your list,, i will have burnt off at least 15-20 cards. creature based mill is for fun and group game but it wont be very competitive.

ah, ok. right now my key creature is undead alchemist, simply for generating tokens while blocking, plus mill if ever needed. defintely going to go spell route. thanks :D

You NEEED glimpse the unthinkable. vision charm, memory sluice, and tome scour are all one mana drops that are great. vision and memory both do 4 cards, tome does 5. memory has conspire, which is a nice touch. I also find that mind funeral can be very useful. I got twenty cards out once with it. Raven guild master is NASTY when you get him unblockable, which you can do with many different one mana drops.

I plan on getting some glimpse asap. i have 4 sluice and 4 tomescours. vision charm is definitely a good idea. and i need to get some raven guild masters.

Your deck needs to think about likely threats.
I'd get rid of any creature that doesn't help your mill, and replace them with something like Propaganda.
Spells should be about achieveing your win-con and supporting it only.
Choose the 4 most important cards in your deck and focus everything else to make them work quickly.
Cards like Belltower Sphinx are conditional, as you need to assume your opponents' defence *may* be too strong for you to get through.
Nice idea - cut it down to 60 and you'll no doubt have some fun.

oh, you should run at least a couple of ghost quarters. to work with your archive traps. it destroys a land, and then allows them you search their library for another, giving you an opportunity to mill them for 13 cards for free essentially.

that's a good idea, i'll invest in some.

Trim to 60 cards and focus on putting in only cards that will mill your opponet or stall them while you mill (propaganda, go for the throat, mana leak), so you get more time to mill them.

i took out a few lands, and i took out induce paranoia, and added 3 mana leaks... I'm still running about 75... what 15 should i trim out of the deck?

hm... From what I undertand, 75-ish isn't to bad for mill.

But, if you want to thin down to closer to 60... I would say to take out wall of tangelcord, seeing as how you can't pay the G to give it reach.
the erasure since you are only running a single of it, (or boost it and take out something else), the phantasmal bear and kraken hatchling,
and move MOSTt everything that you are running 3 of to only 2.

and you should only need about 20-24 lands. I find that to be what most people run. If you have any more than that you tend to get flooded a lot.

ok thanks. i'll definitely have to lose the bear, and the erasure. i like to have the hatchling and the wall until i can get some hedron crabs. but they're going asap. hah.

27 lands is too much, drop 3 islands and 2 swamps

Id get rid of Archive trap as its only usefull if someone is searching their library. You Also need 4 Dark Rituals if you want to have a good mill deck. Also Twincast x 4 is a must I love Double Twincasting a Mind Funeral so an opponent has to mill till he or she hits 12 lands.

Also Get Oona in this Deck she is a Nice one drop. Also a nice Creature to have is Dimir Doppelganger i know it does not mill but can add very good defence with a milling deck.

run some snapcaster mages. that would work well with the archive trap, also with ghost quarter

might also want to try ponder or thought scour

I have a playset of thought scours, but it's a 2 mill and a draw, kind of a weak draw. but thanks

Maybe a Nephalia Drownyard instead of Duskmantle, House of Shadow. 2 mill for 3 mana is better than 1 mill for 2 mana.

Also, you should thin the deck down to 60 to increase the chance of drawing Jace and your other good cards.

I don't get it, why would any1 make a 78 card deck with 1-2 copies of most cards in it... it is very unstabil... U have a lot of cards, that U don't even need... Sorry, but U really should narow the deck to 60 cards & drop the Signet & stuff...

Here is my version of the mill (soon to be reconstructed): http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=339957

Since you're attempting to mill the opponent, you could consider going full blue.

I would take out Phantasmal bear, Geralf's mindcrusher (as a general rule if it costs 6 or more mana it better win you the game, and if it costs 5 mana it better be godamn good.), Tanglecord and Keening Stone, Memory Erosion (not enough mill),. Belltower Sphinx (not enough mill), Lurking Informant (same), Kraken Hatchling (completely worthless in this deck) and Traumatize (by the time you have 5 mana half of their deck SHOULD not be that much) and Duskmantle. I would also consider taking out Curse of the Bloody Tome.

So what would I put in?

Mindcrank, Sword of Body and Mind, Thought Scour, Nephalia Drownyard and more Jace's.

So in the end it would look SOMETHING like this

I think there are too many cards in the deck, thus making it inconsistent. You should take some out of the deck (like the phantasmal bear). It'll make it so you're more likely to draw the cards that'll make you win the game.
Here is my mill deck, let me know what you think of it!
