Deck discussion for Boros Landfall

What do you guys think? I'm having a bit a trouble deciding exactly how to set it up... which cards should be mainboard and which should be SB. Also, if you knew you were facing this deck, what would you want to play? I know this isn't tourniment quality yet but I like the idea and wonder if maybe some modifications could make it tourniment worthy.

this is a good deck tho i would reccomend a couple cards and question a few too but first i am wondering why you have ruin ghost in here when theres nothing that has an ability that activates when it hits play again. so i would reccomend a kemba's Skyguard that way you have somthing you can use the ruin ghost on and yeah thats a good deck and also check out my flaming demise deck

Ruin Ghost exiles a land, not a creature, so he help boost the landfall abilities. Although, after reading it again, I'm not sure if he's exactly worth it because the land doesn't come back until after my turn is over, and I'm having a little bit of space issues getting what I want to fit in the deck.

What cards would you reccomend? And what other questions do you have?

Any ideas? This deck has potential, I can feel it. I just cant figure it out. Cards I am thinking about:
Seer's Sundial
Basilisk Collar
Seize the Initiative
Thunder Strike
Karn the Dragonlord

Cosi's Trickster is vastly underrated, Explorer's scope is sexy on a Lynx/Pede (especially if they also have Adventuring gear on). Zektar Shrine will punch the opponent in the balls if you're playing a good landfall. Searing Blaze kicks ass.

dragon master outcast was a card that I thought about putting in my boros deck (you can check it if you want, i love feedback) but i figured, hey, this is an aggro-at your face-deck. it's not meant to go into turn 6.
he is good if you pop him late in the game, but early, i can just see him being a jump blocker or a target for doomblades.

if you really like him, and he runs well for you, id sideboard him. if you're going against a slow control/ramp, then he'd fit in perfect.

but i found the main problem with my boros running slow, was lack of creatures. if someone clears the board, and then you only have the little guys left, you're in a bad position.

just my two cents :3

also, i think 8 equipment is a lot. i dont know how it works for you, but i'd much rather a basilisk collar/sword of body and mind over explorer's scope.

hope i felped, xD

I actually run the Dragonmaster for the exact reason you said not to. I don't expect him to be on the table for very long, but I have found he is an AMAZING distraction because your oponent thinks he has to remove him. In an extreme case esterday, I dropped him and a Steppe Lynx turn 3 against BU control. They tap out to doom blade him, and on my next turn I drop a fetchland for double landfall, play and equip a Explorer Scope to the Steppe Lynx, flame slash his Wall of Omens, and drop Assault Strobe on the Steppe Lynx. Swing with the Steppe Lynx, the scope turns over a land... 12 damage and I win.

Sure this isn't the 'expected' gain from using him, but dropping him on ~ turn 4 demands a kill, which often clears the wa for my real threats. I just finished play-testing this version and I agree four scopes is too much, I think 2 is a good number. They are simply too powerful on a Steppe Lynx or Geopede to scrap.

Thanks for taking the time to leave all your comments :)

Yeah, I call dudes like him "removal magnets". For example, in my Black Sacrifice deck, Mortician Beetle is often on the field for...half a frickin' second =P

0
Posted 21 December 2010 at 23:36

Yup! Especially in a deck with scopes, you gotta remove him at ur first oppertunity. And with a measly cost of R, you can easily hold him back in your hand to play when you really want ur opponent tapped out. Plus, as ethan mentioned, he is useful bs control.

0

That would certainly be interesting, though in a game it would probably simply be whoever draw the better hand wins. Over all though, I think my deck is superior to yours because of my spells. Silece and Emerge Unscathed have worked wonders for this deck and are two cards too rarely seen in aggro. Just yesterday someone conceded on turn 3 at a standard tourniment to this deck (he was playing Jace UB Control)... The game went:
1) Plains, Steppe Lyx -- Island
2) Mesa-> Plains, swing for 4, Steppe Lynx -- Silence, Island
3) Mesa-> Mountain, Assault Strobe on Steppe Lynx, swing for 12 -- Silence, Concede

Vs just about any deck, 2x Steppe Lynx, 2x Mesa, 1x Plains, 1x Assault Strobe, 2x Silence is an unbeatable 8 cards in our first 4 turns.

Commented. No probs on the ideas, I used to feel bad whenever I borrowed deck concepts too much, but traveling around the country to enter tourniments has taught me that there is no shame in building upon others' ideas. In a room where fifteen people are running a deck 90% identical to yours, a little innovation goes a long way.

I have considered all of those cards at some point. However, none of them are truely useful in this deck because they are either unreliable or slow. By turn 4, this deck is well on its way to winning the game, and taking the time to drop a Planeswalker that is only useful anyway if I draw him on turn 4 is not a good idea. The Bushwacker is simply too unreliable to be effective in this deck, so I replaced him with a Goblin Guide. The Skyfisher is also a nice card, but he makes me return a permanent to my hand (thus slowing down the aggro).

Just gave this deck the "Tournament Quality" label. Dunno why I didn't before, as over the past week this deck has become one of my two go to Standard decks, and it's been messing havoc in my local club. This is definitely a deck I will be taking on my next tour, most likely along with 'Actual Stompy', 'Vampire Blitzkreig', and, if I can make it consistant enough, my newest aggro deck, 'Kuldotha Red'.

if you don't mind, could you explain why you made such changes?

I haven't really tested my boros deck in fnm, and I'd love some insight.

0

Boros Landfall is above all, a landfall-based aggro deck (duh). The increase in fetch lands allows me to activate 2 landfalls reliably early game. Adventuring gear is great because it gives any creature Steppe Lynx's ability, or it can be used on the Steppe Lynx for complete awesomeness. I like SoBnM, simply because its epic

Since we are adding equipment, Stoneforge Mystic becomes a very useful card to have.

Kor Skyfisher is a 2/3 flier for 2. His "Drawback" really becomes an asset in this deck, by allowing us to make landfalls late game when we would otherwise run out.

Spikeshot Elder is simply one of the best Red 1-drops in the game.

Koth is a boss and provides a stronger mid-game.

I think that covers everything really, feel free to ask if there is something you don't understand

0

I see, thanks :)

i just remember the 4x silence, assault strobe, emerge unscathed and bolt. lol

so I wanted to know why you made such changes, seeing how our decks were very similar.
it's obvious you're a more experienced deck builder than I am, so I figured if you made certain changes, they were probably for the better.

I'm still messing with my boros. but I'm digging the land base you go going on, lol

Although those spells work in theory, I began going on a standard tourniment tour recently and this build works so much better. Old build was 2-6 in the one tourni i did it in, this one is 34-6 with 3 top 8s. and I play serious magic

0
Posted 01 January 2011 at 19:09

Magic isn't magic if it's not serious. That's the way I play, anyway, haha.

And nice, 34-6 is pretty sweet, and top 8 is always nice. :D

As I said, my boros is still.. gettin' there, lol. Don't got the money for a koth, although i wanted one of him from the very start D: <

You can check up on it though, and see how the changes have come.

(You've inspired a lot of those changes, lol)

Thanks man. Good philosophy. Do you play tourniments for cash?

0
Posted 01 January 2011 at 19:39

I thought so as well. And no, here we don't really have many magic options. The prizes are... crap more or less But here, we don't really care for the rewards, we play for the further understanding of the game.
like some of the players here are insane, o.o
but, on the upside, whenever there's provincials or something else along those lines, the prizes are cash and a nice amount of cards. So, basically we're in training all year 'round, lol

just thought of another question; why spikeshot elder over cunning sparkmage?

i see bothn arguements, suchas spikeshot can do more damage, and attack after doing so, but the mana each turn seems a bit.. slow.

and with sparkmage, itll only ever be 1 damage, but no mana is required.

but what are your views on the subject?

0
Posted 02 January 2011 at 14:44

Spikeshot is a 1-drop, which is nice. Sparkmage cant get going until T3, while Spikeshot can get going sooner, pluz can be used as an attacker.

Definitely add Basilisk Collar. And maybe Devastating Summons and/or Goblin bushwhacker. They make a great combo together but each is good in its own rite.

0

I have two sb, but for the most part Id rather have Gears. Devistating Summons is such a horrible card in this deck I honestly wonder if you have ever place Boros. Bushwacker is good, but not as good as the other guys I have

0
Posted 04 January 2011 at 16:34

Nothing is more hilarious than watching someone cast Devastating Summons and then having their Bushwhacker countered! The look on their face is priceless! XD

There's a right deck for DS, but this is not it.

0
Posted 04 January 2011 at 23:41

They wouldn't counter the bushwhacker since it'd be cast after DS, you'd want to counter that so they don't even get the tokens. DS is a good card, you just have to not be stupid when playing it. I say that in the lightest sense meaning, that a slight miscalulation can end you or set you back a few. When playing it I generally pay close attention to their mana availability so they won't be throwing anything out I don't know and I can swing for 10 on turn three with just those two cards. If I went first, they will have almost nothing to defend with and have little to no mana to counter with.

Honestly though this is a great deck and That is the only thing I would change if playing it.

0
Posted 08 January 2011 at 03:12

My main problem with Bushwacker is that its a situational card. Most cards in this deck are thinks I would always be happy to see... the bushwacker is not always amazing. In addition, what could you take out for him? I'm always interested in improvement... how would you change the deck?

One Skyfisher and one Spikeshot for 2 Bushwackers. It'll add just the right amount of extra kick to the deck.

Hmmm...Alright. I wanted to see what the results would be. Also, while I agree that Boros will be a tough deck in MB...I don't think it will be the deck to beat. The deck to beat is going to be a new adaptation of an old deck, or something altogether different. It will be a control deck, and it will very likely have White.

Boros will be great because it will be the only thing fast enough to have a chance against this new control deck.

The reason I ask is because I understand the Sword of body and mind also gives a creature to add to the arggo, with the mill as a side effect. But I am not sure dropping to 2 life is worth the effort, but I can see why untapping lands can be helpful in this deck.

Also what cards from MB do you think will work well in this?
