I always preferred "free" counterspells like Daze and Foil/Accumulated Knowledge combo.If your opponent knows you are playing counterspells he will just wait until you are tapped out of all of your mana/lands and THEN he will play his best card. With something like Daze, it will destroy him!! You tap out all your mana, he thinks he can now play his best card he has in the deck, and BAM!!!! you play a Daze and make him cry.
