Deck Description

I've decided to get back into standard, after only playing commander and the occasional pre-release for the last few years. As such, I don't want to invest in RTR block cards, since they will rotate out of standard in October. This deck is only built from M14, Theros and Born of the Gods cards, and will be standard legal for quite some time.

This deck aims to play control, and limit enemy board presence. It's win con is Kioras ultimate, to get an emblem which produces a 9/9 leviathan every turn.

This deck came about thanks to BotG Kiora, the Crashing Wave and Whelming Wave. I think come rotation in October, this deck will be competitive in standard.

I welcome all feedback and suggestions and will continue to develop this deck. If you have any suggestions, please let me know your reasoning, and what you think should be removed. It would be most helpful!

How to Play

Vortex elemental is excellent with voyage's end and retraction helix, as it allows the enemy creature to be shuffled in, and interrupt to return vortex elemental to owners hand. Retraction helix also works very well with kiora's follower and a second creature to allow 2 creatures to be returned to owners hand.

Perplexing Chimaera can be used to steal a spell, then can regain control of perplexing chimaera with retraction helix + creature/whelming wave/voyage's end.

Archaeomancer also makes an excellent target for voyage's end to allow a safe block, and reuse the etb ability. It also brings back whelming wave, which combo very well. Getting this combo allows kiora to build with very little threat, since it can ignore 1 permanent a turn for +1 ability.

Archeaomancer, Perplexing Chimaera and Whelming Wave all work well together to allow taking of spells, stopping enemy plays, and keeping the board clear.

Mutavault provides a 2/2 creature for use with kiora's follower, and avoids whelming wave.

Negate used to deal with non-creature spells, and can sb in disperse and/or dissolve if lacking. Voyage's end works nicely targeting enemy creatures, or any creature but kiora's follower.

Quicken allows curse of the swine or whelming wave to be cast as an instant, and also a bit of extra card draw.

Kiora, the crashing wave can protect itself and player from 1 permanent a turn, while just playing control style, and hopefully pulling archaeomancer and whelming wave. At 4 mana, that lets all creatures be returned to owners hands every other turn. At 8 mana, every turn. When Kiora gets to 5 loyalty, can get the emblem which will usually secure the win.

Sideboard:
Creature heavy deck:
add 2 Voyage's End, 1 Retraction Helix, 1 Archaeomancer, 2 Dissolve, 2 Quicken, 2 Curse of the Swine
remove 3 Negate, 4 Perplexing Chimera, 3 Disperse

Non-creature deck:
add 1 archaeomancer, 1 kiora's follower, 2 Dissolve, 1 Negate, 3 Swan Song
remove 2 quicken, 2 whelming wave, 1 retraction helix, 3 vortex elemental

Thanks for checking it out, glad you like.

There aren't really any good octopuses/krakens/serpents/leviathans in standard at the moment, they're all a bit pricey. Kiora, the Crashing Wave is the best way to generate a load of them, which is why I've built this deck - especially with whelming wave!

Thanks for the comment :) Are there any changes you would make to this? It's still a bit rough, not sure on numbers of each card, but I think the right cards are there now..

I've been thinking of getting back into standard, and i think this deck will be competitive come October. I'm also expecting some more creatures for whelming wave to ignore in Journey into Nyx.

I've made some changes to this deck now..

Removed: 4 Kiora's Follower, 1 Perplexing Chimaera, 1 Kiora, the Crashing Wave
Added: 3 Curse of the Swine, 3 Quicken
Added to SB: 4 Fog

So Kiora's follower first off doesn't work well with Whelming Wave, and only helps with retraction helix.
The perplexing chimaera is useful, but I just didnt feel 4 of was required.
With the added draw of Quicken, I think it will be able to draw into a Kiora fairly regularly, also with the 4 temples, and if sbing either of dissolve or voyage's end.

Curse of the Swine allows exiling of creatures, and if followed by Whelming Wave then removes the tokens.

Quicken allows a bit faster draw, and also allows Curse of the Swine to be cast during opponents attack phase, allowing whleming wave to be cast the next turn so they don't have a load of 3/3s to swing with.

Fog can be used to effectively waste 1 opponent turn in a creature heavy deck. If they've got quite a few creatures on the board, then rather than play a whelming wave, let them have 1 more turn to spend more mana playing creatures, and just use fog, followed by the wave/curse following turn.

Interesting... ...you know the Chimera could cause you to lose Kiora, right?.. ...or any important spell.......

Only 9 green mana could make you end up being late with Kiora & being unable to ultimate her & without that, you can't win the game...

You don't have much creatures for Helix... ...I'd rather play Cyclonic Rift...

Some Jaces could definiately slow down your opponent & protect Kiora, it can also compensate for times you don't draw a wipe in time...

You definiately need F.O.G.!! It's essential to protect Kiora!..

Curse of the Swine is good against any devotion deck, especially Gruul, but your primary goal is to protect Kiora & thhose filthy, green pigs will also pose threat on her & you probably wasted an entyre turn on that spell... ...the pigs can attack immediately, because Curse is a Sorcery...

In this deck, Follower has no combo to it(there isn't Nykthos, nor any creature with "Ispiration" ability)...

Use the Negates in the sideboard & more of them!.. ...you have quite some useless stuff in the sideboards anyway...

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. You've definitely made me think about this!

The Chimera could well cause important spells to be lost - it is largely there as threat, but if it is used, casting whelming wave will return it to my hand regardless. Also it's the reason there are not many creatures. If I have already given control of chimera, then play a spell to return it to my hand, the best use of mana for the opponent is to allow the spell to go off, returning the chimera to my hand.

The reason cyclonic rift if not included is firstly because it will rotate out soon, although I do see that it would be an improvement... Retraction Helix works excellently with Kiora's follower. The follower also acts as a mana source as well, so thats why it's included. Could add the 0/3 hexproof manadork, but would lose the ability to use the helix with the follower.

With Jace, again, he will rotate out soon, so while it would certainly help the deck, I won't be adding it to this build :(

I will sb in fog - again, the worry I have is currently green mana, with there only being Temple of Mystery to produce U/G - hopefully there will be more in Journey to Nyx, but I will have to wait it out. I know for the moment, I could use the RTR dual lands and be fine, but I'm just aiming for this to be competitive come October.

I think there will be at least some more serpents/leviathans/krakens/octopuses which can go well with whelming wave, since there are currently only 3 in standard.

What other cards do you think I should SB? Only really looking for M14 onwards...

Let me know if there's any decks you want me to look at - though I don't think I'll be as much help as you've been, your decks always look good anyway.

Fog should be in the main...

For the sideboards, I'd say: Some Essence Scatter, put the Negates there, 1-2 Dispel may be & 1 Swan Song(but not for sure)... ...1 extra Fog, if you add 3 in the main deck... ...1-2 Fade into Antiquity... ...may be 2 Bramblecrush.......

Shame you won't add RTR cards, 'cuz Simic Charm is a must addition here... ...it can save your Kiora from Downfall, Dreadbore, etc, it can slow down your opponent in his/her board-game & there's still the boosting ability.......

I have problems with a Bant control built... ...I might as well give it up, 'cuz Bant just isn't really competative these dayes, but I might could make it work...
